The TOWN OF PALM BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT is recruiting for the

position of Telecommunicator.

Starting: $35,999 - $46,752 (Based on Experience)

Salary Range: $35,999 - $55,167

NOTICE: Testing for this recruitment process will take place on

Monday, June 18, 2007.

MINIMUM EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Education equivalent to graduation from high school. Training and

experience equal to the position preferred, but not required.

Must complete and sign an FDLE Criminal History Check waiver and

successfully pass said criminal check.

Must participate in an on-site visit to the Telecommunications Unit.

Must complete a Skills Assessment Test.

Must be familiar with computers, window-based programs, and possess

computer keyboard typing abilities.

Must attain a minimum typing speed of net 30 wpm with a minimum

gross speed of 35 wpm or more and a maximum of nine errors per a 5-

minute timed test on a computer.

Must successfully pass an oral interview process; an extensive

background check conducted by the police department, including

fingerprinting; a credit check; a psychological examination; and a

medical examination, including hearing test and drug screening.

POSITION:

Telecommunicators dispatch for police, fire, and paramedics, and are

responsible for receiving all emergency and non-emergency calls,

processing the information, assessing the needs, and dispatching

appropriate public safety resources for response. This position

involves shift work including nights, weekends, and holidays, as

required. Telecommunicators must develop and maintain a thorough

knowledge of communications management, technical design and

application, FCC rules and regulations, and computer operations.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the knowledge and operation

of a complex telephone system, an 800 MHz trunking radio system, and

a computer interface system with the Florida and National Crime

Information Centers. Telecommunicators must also possess computer

literacy, particularly window based programs. This position works

in a stress environment and requires exceptional speaking/listening

skills, the ability to successfully complete numerous tasks

simultaneously, and the ability to work both independently and as

part of a team, and remain calm, decisive, and professional when

dealing with the public.
