We have horrid toe nails in this family. The big toes nail grows sideways on

both sides of the ig toe. I had surgery on them when I was in my late teens

(a podiatrist). That is the only way to stop it. They get them out and then

they kill the sides of the root. Then you will just have a straight growing

nail that will never do it again. My 15 yr old daughter just had one of hers

done and will soon be doing the other.

It is my understanding that you are a great risk with any type of diabetes

for toe/foot loss if infections occur. So yes, I would say it is VERY important

to get that taken care of ASAP by a doctor.

Hi Melody

I have the same problem. I was able to trim the edge of the nail down about

3/4 of the way down the nail and get it out. I have an ongoing problem with

an infection trying to get started beside the nail all the time so I use

polysporin on it several times a day. Seems to keep it under control. Good

luck with it. If you can't get the nail out, you'll have to have a doctor

do it. It's important that an infection doesn't get a chance to get

started, especially with our possible circulation problems from the

diabetes.

The biggest worries are getting an infection. Anything that breaks the

skin and causes blood flow could result in an infection. You could do

it yourself. And be sure to disinfect the area with alcohol, hydrogen

peroxide or soap and water, and also bandage it up.

However, I would still have a doctor look at it later. If you are

seeing one soon then it might be better to wait until the doctor can see

it. Or you might want to try to get an appointment for that. If the

pain gets bad you might take care of it yourself, or get someone

(spouse, kid, friend) to do it for you. But still see a doctor about it.

By the way, I've had toenails simply peel off (with some blood) just by

pulling on them. That indicates a pretty high sugar level in the toes.

Hie thee unto thy podiatrist with all due haste.
