Large doses of steroids can cause diabetes. I gained 45 lbs in less than 2 months when I was on heavy doses of steroids back in 1995. Also, a severe illness can cause diabetes. I have a friend that is very thin that has diabetes. He had cancer 20-25 yrs ago. The only history of diabetes in our family is my brother, an uncle and me. My brother was in a near fatal accident and developed diabetes right after that, my uncle had 10 brothers and sisters and he is the only one with diabetes, but he has had health problems for many years. My brother and my uncle were not overweight. I think being overweight is the major cause of diabetes, but it is not always the case. hugs Eunice

Guest guest
I was NEVER overweight in my life, in fact, I was very thin. I was in a very bad auto accident which caused both lungs to collapse....which caused the first 4 of 6 cardiac arrests. Nine months later I had to have breast surgery (still results of the auo accident), then 3 weeks later it absessed and I had to have breast surgery again. That's when the nurses started saying " has anyone ever told you that you are diabetic? " Each time that I was in the hospital the nurses would ask me the same thing. I still wasn't diagnosed with diabetes for three more years. Sometimes the doctors just simply do not pay attention to the blood tests. Guest guest
I'm 98% sure that I'm diabetic because of steroids...I won't even touch the stuff again-even if it means that next time, i go blind. I'm 220 lbs with no history of type1 diabetes in my family so this is why I'm convinced the staroids caused it. However, on top of that, I used to be insulin resistant. I used natural methods to get rid of the resistance so now am down to more normal doses of insulin (well, normal for pregnancy). I think that doctors need to be more responsible about warning us of the risks of steroid injections...I would have never guessed that diabetes is a bigger side-effect than expected.
