Hi Fran:

Sorry to hear you are having such a bad time with the numbers. One thought

that crossed my mind is some of it might be driven by your fear/paranoia.

The only other thing I can think of is possible stress in your life that

might be higher now than maybe in the past and/or at least some of it what

you are eating and when.

Other than the above, I don't know.

This whole week my numbers for some reason I dont know range from around 200

to droping to about 60. I have been getting paranoid and testing like every

hour for a few days.

Keep busy. Do anything to keep your mind off it. I have done this before

as well. You can't let it get to you. Testing that often will not help

you.

Just test the times you are supposed to. It's like someone who is trying

to lose weight and they weigh themselves everyday. You know that is a

waste of time and also demoralizing...and not reflecting accuracy. Same

here.

Hang in there.

Sometimes answers aren't always given when we want.

Sometimes there isn't any reason we can pinpoint as to why

Bgs 'do their own thing'. Just eat as well as you can, drink liquids and

And relax.

Im using up strips like crazy. I KNOW I dont need to test so much but

its becoming crazy how much I test. What do you guys do to deal with

this? fran

Thanks Ken. I think your right. Ive been so paranoid lately over my

numbers. When something happens like my leg falling asleep at my desk I

panic if its really asleep or Im getting nerve problems. I think Im going

through scared mode now. Im not handling it all well. fran

I know the feeling. We are learning about diabetic animals in Pharm and

today the professor was talking about all the problems. My Clin Path

professor the other day was " yelling " at me for not taking my meds, but I

can't afford them on a student budget w/o insurance. ...he thought scare

tactics were good.

Thanks Tam. I noramaly do good about testing on time and charting. This

week I have had more time on my hands. Plus had some hypos. I have to stop

being paranoid and find stuff to do. Plus my fingers are getting sore:)

Today I have done better. I forced myself not to test as much. Only tested 3

times so far. I can totally relate to test addiction now. fran

Fran,

For what it's worth, I fret all of the time about such things myself. And

even after almost 3 years sometimes I feel shaky and sick when I'm around

100. And worse, I've gotten as low as 42 without realizing I'm hypoing.

Every day is more to learn, and it does get wearying. But it's better than

the alternative.

Hi Jae. At least Im not alone. When my sugar is normal I feel good, almost

a high feeling if thats the right words. I can tell my body has to adjust to

it when its lower. I guess its been out of wack so long that it dont know

what to do at normal. fran

Fran..

Scare tactics don't help. Learning a lot does, but student budgets don't.

My sugars are not controlled well at all. Part of it, is that I got a meter

down here in St. Kitts (Prestige Meter) that doesn't read correctly (I wish

it was correct 1/2 the time). But also, the meal options down here aren't

the greatest. We have to rely on what comes in on the ship from Florida

once a week. It's apparently better then it used to be, but it's not good.

Stress is a huge part of my life too (hence I'm up at 4am to study for exam

today) and that doesn't help sugars.

I keep telling myself I will gain better control when I get to the states

(next April)...but can I wait that long w/o a risk?

What sorts of things do you have to eat there?

Is there any way you can increase the amount of exercise you get?

Hi . Maybe you can call a hospital and see if they have any

programs for people who cant afford their meds, meters, etc? At least until

you graduate. fran

The problem is that I live in St. Kitts....this means that even the

hospitals here aren't good. I'm going to look at that 28 day program you

sent.

I have done this called around at Doctor offices hospitals trying to get some

help to pay for my meds mainly the strips which are outragous.. its like $68.

for 100 of them .. well that is testing three times a day and I am still knew

to all of this so I hope that I will be able to know what is wrong like when

I am at a high sugar or when I am at a low sugar.. I havent realized really

what a good point is yet.. so anyway I cant of yet find any help.. now the

company where you got your meter from you.. might be able to get on what they

call

patient assistance.. I am in the process of doing that right now but its going

to take 6 - 8 weeks before I hear anything.. I cant see why I would not be

approved but I have had alot of downfalls circumstances so who knows.. anyway

sorry not very positive tonight.. or whatever..I went to the ambulance house

tonight and they checked my blood.. and it was 184 that is a little high..

higher

than 140 which was as high as my doctor wanted me to be or I think that is

where any of us should be.. 70- 140... so anyway who knows.. I am going to go

for now .. Melody

Paranois or compulsion.obsession? Actually, who cares what it's

called. Are your meter and test strips in a test kit? If so, do you

have a place you normally keep them? Try putting them someplace you

will remember. Don't hide them. Place them in a bathroom cabinet or a

bedroom drawer and try to leave them alone. Find out something else to

do with your time. Whether it's housecleaning, watching TV or taking a

long bath. Go ahead and test before meals or whenever you 'normally' test.

BTW - when do most people around here test? I do about an hour after

waking and an hour or less before eating.

I'm not going to go into details, but there was one Doctor I hate. I

only saw him once. Anyway, in the middle of 'chastising' me he comes up

with; " and it's going to affect your penis too! " out of the middle of

nowhere. Like he thought that would be a major ruling factor in my

life. His life maybe...

Anyway, some people have no idea what others go through. When I got

medical shoes for my foot problems the guy fitting the shoes asked about

the pair I was wearing. I said I got them on sale somewhere. He looked

at me as if I just said I ate live children. I can't afford to go out

and buy expensive shoes all the time.

What about the hospital? Do they have a cafeteria you can use?

Something not expensive? With food that you don't have to be bedridden

in order to gag down? =D

Yes its in a kit. I keep them on my desk. Maybe I should keep them in the

bathroom so Im not staring at them. I did good the last 2 days and only

tested when I was suppose to. I test when I get up. Before each meal and

after and before bed. The doctor told me 8 times a day so I can keep better

watch on my numbers. fran

I test when I get up and at bedtime. I am supposed to test 2 hours after eating

but don't always remember to do that. Guess I need to get a timer. Sheesh!!!

Something else to carry around (meter, Glucagon kit, glucose tabs, snack). I

carry a tote bag instead of a purse! lol

I test first thing in the morning and that's it. Mainly because I can't

afford the strips. Now that I have insurance, if the strips are covered

then I will definitely test a little more often.

Yes, my meter, lancets and strips are in a case. It came with the meter. I was

very lucky that my Doctor gave me the kit, a freestyle. It is easy to use and

small enough to carry around. When I am hope I usually leave it on the kitchen

table. When I am working I carry it in a bag that I use to carry my books.

I have been testing every AM, fasting, and at least once more each day at

various times. Every once in a while I will also test if I feel a low coming on

or a migraine happening. Just to keep track of both of those. I've been

finding that the lows are less frequent when I am home than when I am working.

SInce I was on vacation last week I think I only had one low episode. But I did

have another migraine as well. On a different day. But I also notice that when

I'm home I tend to eat more frequently. :) Not too good for the diet but I

usually get more exercise when I am home as well. So I hope it evens out. My

bgs in the am have been fairly steady at an average of 109. That's good I

hope??

I test these days after eating...2 hrs after...or if I try a new food. Don't

worry so much about the a.m. readings anymore. Guess I should, but hey,

gotta 'cut' somewhere, to save strips.

Ever notice that the older a woman gets, the larger her purse becomes? When I

was a teenager, I carried a tiny little purse that held a lipstick and my ID

(pre cell phone days). Each succeeding decade, my purse size has doubled. I

figure that by the time I'm 70, I'll just be dragging one of those

bags-on-wheels behind me.

Today I tested when I woke up, 2 hours after breakfast, just before exercise,

after exercise (10-15 minutes or so, enough to cool down and stop sweating),

2 hours after lunch and plan on testing 2 hours after dinner.

How well I understand this TAm about cutting down .. I dont know when to

test anymore I cant test three times a day .. I cant afford it I would rather

know once a day what my reading is then not at all.. so its sad we cant do what

we are suppose to do because of the financial burden this illness puts on us..

bye for now Melody
