Sue, Your progress report is inspiring to me and I need all the inspiration

I can get! LOL! Anyway, Abby has been casein free all her life due to severe

issues with dairy in breast milk, and on and on so I was wondering with a

child with such dairy issues when and what is the best thing to start with

regarding yogurt. 6 months, nut yogurt or goat? I would hope that Abby would

have such a great response to it like Adam. Thanks,

Kathy, mom of Abby-9 ASD, UC and SCD since 2-21-04

-Sue:

Great stufff! Good for all of you. A couple of questions. Pardon

my ignorance but what makes the cultures in yogurt supposedly so

much more healing and effective than probiotics? Why do some kids

respond great to the yogurt and others not? I'm just curious being

that I'm starting the yogurt tomorrow.

Also, with you being on the diet as well, what types of changes do

you see in yourself? Did you have any kinds of issues before going

on SCD?

Going out in public. I have no problem except when we go to town

once a week and have to eat. That still is a major problem. I

suppose we could all pack a lunch. I would kill for him to be able

to just have fries once per week. Last week we went to 's. I

ordered plain grilled chicken, no bun, no condiments, nothing. Of

course they screwed it up and Kenzie had no wait ten minutes...not

good after standing in line 15 minutes. The girls get their trays

and eat at another table. But there are fries and burgers

everywhere and I know it's hard on him. I can't afford to go to any

place other than fast food. I guess the answer would be packing

lunches. I always use to look forward to our weekly trips to Burger

King Playland. When you live in the sticks, that's your big treat.

Oh well, I digest.

Hi Kathy,

If I were you I'd start with the nut yogurt, because you will be

less nervous about it. If all goes well with it, you can decide

whether you want to try goat or not.

We waited 3 1/2 months to start the goat yogurt (actually, I tried

sooner, but she wouldn't eat it!)

Thanks, I guess you need a " yogurt maker " ? I will wait awhile longer because

am trying to work out all the phenol issues and really get the aciphphilus

on board too. It's something I can plan for in a couple of months.

Kathy,

I have to tell you, Adam never was a big milk drinker before GFCF,

didn't really like cheese - he was NOWHERE near the stories you hear

about " addicted " kids. Also, he had regular ice cream while on GFCF

maybe 2-3 times, with NO reaction (behavioral or GI). He did react

to gluten infractions (very mean and noncompliant). So I have to

say I'm not at all sure that he has any negative reactions to dairy.

Even so, I was afraid to try it, and am watching so carefully for

any reactions! (concerned I will make him worse, but it will be so

gradual I won't see it right away, etc etc).

For someone with a known reaction to dairy, I think I might try the

nut yogurt, with an accpetable nut (I think Marjan has posted those

that have worked well - I think hazelnut or almond). Start really

slowly (that part is REALLY hard!)

If you did want to try goat, I guess I'd wait several months - at

LEAST 3, probably more - until you think some good amound of healing

has happened (evidence - improvements of some kind. Perhaps less

reactive to foods).

Then start REALLY slow - 1/2 tsp day 1, none on day 2. !/2 tsp

again. Then 3/4 tsp. Then 1 tsp. Then 1.5 tsp. If changes are

happening, maybe hold at that level awhile. ETc.

Hope this helps.
