Guest guest
I'm so sorry that your mother and you are going through this, . My dad was having similar problems the first couple of days after his second surgery. In his case, I really believe that the drug they were giving him for his nausea (phenagren) was causing (or at least contributing to) his problems. He would be fine and then they would give him the Phenagren and he would start gagging, having dry heaves (even though there was absolutely nothing to vomit in his stomach), feeling more nauseated, lots of foamy saliva, trouble breathing, and really out of it. I found out that Phenagren was in the same family as Thorazine, which he had a bad reaction to. Phenagren is also used as an antihistimine, which I was thinking couldn't be good for him. My dad had a really bad reaction to the Ativan--to the point that they took a CAT scan of his head because they thought he might have had a stroke (he was totally out of it and very agitated, and stayed that way for quite a while). I'm not trying to scare you or anything--your mom sounds like she is tolerating it pretty well. Everyone is so different when it comes to reactions to drugs. My dad is extremely sensitive to drugs. He got dizzy when I gave him Extra Strength Exedrin for a headache quite a while back. I finally got to the point that I had them write down exactly what they were giving him and why, and wrote down his reactions (if any) to what they gave him. I know I was considered to be overrreacting and kind of a pain to the doctor and some of the nurses, but I truly believe that my interference by getting him off the drugs that were harming him helped him get better. One of the nurses recommended Zofran for the nausea and he seemed to tolerate that pretty well. My dad had a port too, because his veins couldn't handle the constant poking. Good luck, a. My prayers are with you and your mom. Karin --- a wrote: > My poor mom seems to be doing worse now that she has been in the hospital 4 four days. It seems to be getting worse each day. The first day, was decent. No vomitting, all good. day two, dry heaves ??? How? Why? There is nothing in there. She has a J tube draining her small dowel. Wed.. more of the same. Tonight.. even worse. 3 boughts of heaving... nothing there but she is so terribly nauseaous. The first med did nothing.. that added Ativan via IV.. it seemed to settle it abit but come on. Why is this happening..
Guest guest
ERica, It's fenergan, or phenergan, I think. Hope something gives your mom comfort. Guest guest
Step back a minute. Let nature do it's work. Sometimes to many meds are like to many cooks they spoil the broth? Has she had Zofron(the one that literally melts in our mouth) It works fast, and has few side effects. Sometimes once she has a B/M things get better. You are right about the port.. Stay focused but relax and put your faith and your heart with God. Miracles happen and you sound like you need one. Guest guest
a I'm glad to hear this might be turning around for you. The port may mean an extra day but I think it will be worth it. Narice
