Shig-There are two general courses of management of peritoneal

metastasis. One is to try to shrink or slow them down with

chemotherapy. Perhaps some of the new drugs EGF and VEGF inhibitors

that hopefully will be available soon may improve the control.

The other method is aggressive surgery combined with intraperitoneal

chemotherapy at the time of surgery. This has been a controversial

treatment, but is gaining acceptance for selected patients who have

no other metastatic lesions in the chest, liver or distant lymph

nodes, and who are in all other respects healthy. It is a very major

surgery and is not common and is not for everyone. It has resulted

in some cures. Dr. Sugarbaker has been a proponent of such

surgery and if you search the archives under Sugarbaker you will find

a number of posts regarding his procedure.

Best wishes,

Kris
