We've known this for a long time.. Selenium is used during the conversion process, converting T4 to T3, etc. is not possible without selenium. Most of the food grown in the US is selenium deficient. Commercial growers, using chemical fertilizers, have striped the soil of it's selenium.

Sufficient levels of thyroid hormone, via supplementation, reduces the activity of the thyroid gland itself which then results in a decrease of the antibodies which are triggered by gland function.

That's why gland function suppression by use of adequate doses of thyroid hormone, preferably natural, helps to reduce symptoms and folks feel better.

Do you have Hashi's?

selenium and thyroid

SELENIUM SUPPLEMENTATION IN PATIENTS WITH AUTOIMMUNE THYROIDITIS DECREASES THYROID PEROXIDASE ANTIBODIES CONCENTRATIONS

German researchers have found that in areas with severe selenium deficiency, there is a higher incidence of thyroiditis. The researchers concluded that selenium supplementation may reduce inflammation in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis. Me on the Gulf Coast of Tx where having thyroid disease, period, is like having the common cold. My hypothyroid, Grave's Disease, Hashimoto's co-workers working the nursing floor stare at each other like a mirror image. Where I go to drink my coffee at a little small town cafe is loaded with the townspeople, and we're all looking at each other like mirror images, plenty of thyroid disease, etc....the air is loaded with industrial wastes, and I have no doubt that this area of Tx probably has NOTHING in the soil by now, being replaced with more toxic waste. I'm wondering if we're not all good candidates for one of those private space ships to another planet, as that's the only way we'll ever get away from any of it. Any more tickets to the Twilight Zone?
