Guest guest
When I was first diagnosed with ckd (chronic kidney disease) back in the early 90s, which was also when I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, I was told to watch my intake of protein. This meant of course meat and dairy products. However, I don't know if it has been disproved, but in my own life over the past number of years, I no longer concern myself to much with protein intake. If anything, I have increased it since it helps slow down quick acting carbohydrate absorption. Having said that, I do not eat large portions of meat or dairy products. You may recall that the Bernstein program is very high on eating meat in lieu of quick carbohydrates. It may be safe to say the jury is out, but it may also be a pretty safe assumption to say it may be that protein is not as injurious to those with ckd as it once was thought. BTW, my creatine clearance (which is one of the blood tests you should have performed regularly) was something over 3 in the early 90s when I was first diagnosed, but is now running 1.6. This is about 50% kidney function. This is despite my increased protein intake over the past number of years. So, I don't know what else to say, and it may depend on your creatin clearance, but it may be that you'll just have to indulge in some trial and error prior to your next blood work. hth Dave Question for people with kidney problems Hi, Could someone tell me what all a person that has kidney problems not suppose to eat and what can they eat? Guest guest
What I was told was that protein molecules are supposedly the largest of molecules. When they pass through the kidneys, well, they put extra stress on them. As my previous message indicates, I don't know how valid protein restriction with those with ckd is today, and it may depend mostly on the extent of the disease, but probably what I mentioned about the size of molecules does not reflect the latest thinking. Guest guest
Hi, Yes I do have CKD. My creatin was something like 4.5 or something like when I asked last week. I do have high blood pressure but I got it under control with meds. I'm on the heavy side but for the last week or 2 I have been losing weight and my sugars is now in the range of 90 to 150. I'm working on trying to keep it down to at least 120 but it's way better then it use to be. Otis Blue Milwaukee Wisconsin 53218-4349 Voice: Fax: Cell: Email: o.blue@... Guest guest
I wish I had copied the recent research article I read regarding protein consumption and CKD. So I am recalling here from memory, which is not as good as a copy of the original article. The gist of the research seemed to indicate that restricted protein consummption is not as critical as it once was thought to be. The most important indicator for preventing kidney deterioration is keeping the carb consumption low, so the kidneys do not have to work so hard and frequently at filtering excess sugar in the blood stream. So I gathered the best treatment was to restrict carb consumption to acceptable levels that can be easily and readily handled with insulin injections. Low daily total grams carb consumption is the best way to go. This would be true for the treatment of CKD as well as prevention of CKD, especially if one is a diabetic. Personally, for me I have noticed that on those days when I indulge in excess carb consumption, I also have to make a lot more visits to the bathroom to urinate. I do not know if this is something that is just peculiar to me or not, but if others have a similar experience like this, maybe they can let us know. I try to keep my total daily grams of carbs around 65-75 grams of carbs. When I keep it at around 50-60 total grams of carbs per day frequency of urination is noticeably lower. Is it this way for others here? Question for people with kidney problems Hi, Could someone tell me what all a person that has kidney problems not suppose to eat and what can they eat? Guest guest
Harry, I tend to, as you describe it, make more trips to the bathroom, when my bg is running high. This of course could be connected to increased carbohydrate consumption, but not just carbohydrates. What was it used to say? It had to do with a kind of analogy about bigger something and bigger problems, versus, smaller something and smaller problems. Well, on those days where I have eaten smaller portions and may not have taken much extra insulin I do tend to feel better including less trips to the little boys room. Guest guest
Hello Otis, Your nepthrolgist has probably told you how important it is to have good blood pressure control which I assume you are taking steps toward. You will probably seee that creatine clearance drop some as your blood pressure stays in the low range, but keeping on with getting your weight down is very much a part of better kidney health and overall better diabetic health also. Your age and how long you have been poorly controlled are probably factors, not to mention good old genetics. Hang in there and good work in getting going with losing weight. It can't be easy, but you can do it if you put your mind to it. Oh, when I was first diagnosed with high blood pressure, in consideration of my kidney dysfunction, my nepthrolgist told me he wanted me to be " uncomfortable " at times as far as my blood pressure is concerned. This meant, sometimes for example, when bending over and then standing up, I might feel slightly dizzy. This does happen, and is a reminder to me that my bp is on the low side of normal, but the best thing is to have a home blood pressure testing device which can be purchased fairly cheaply. I don't know if you have anyone sighted around however who could read it, but perhaps you can find a neighbor or somehow get it checked other than only every few months. Perhaps there is a talking bp testing unit. Guest guest
In my case I can eat one item a week that is high in potassium. The body does need some of it but if you are having trouble with your kidneys they can't filter it out. Besides the things mentioned it also includes lemons, limes, peaches, kiwi. Talk with your dietitian to get more info and they should be able to give you a list of the things to stay away from. Guest guest
Otis, Although I love these fruits, I don't get to eat them all the time, maybe once a week, so I don't know if that will even hurt me any. I don't have a dietitian (yet), but even so, there are so many that still think old-school and I can't tell if they will give me good or bad info. Guest guest
Dave, Good point about avoiding fruits with high potassium, also good on your other post about having fruits as a treat but not as a necessity. I can't remember where I got this from, likely here on the list, that you are better off BG-wise if you eat fruit along with something else, not by itself. This is the only way I eat fruit and for me it seems to not have much effect on my blood sugars this way. For example, I can get a " low calorie plate " which will have cottage cheese, hamburger patty, perhaps a few tomatoes, and cut-up fruit. This is a satisfying meal that barely raises my blood glucose level after 30, 60 and 90 minutes, so at the 2 hour level it's already been back to normal. Obviously, though, I don't want to eat this same meal every day, but it does bear out that provided I don't gorge myself on fruit, having it along with something else seems to bode well for me. Guest guest
I think I first heard someone on this list talking about protein slowing down the absorption of sugar into the blood system. I've found this to be true. I try to always eat some form of protein with a meal and any snack--i.e. peanut butter and crackers. Surprisingly, my creatine clearance, despite my ckd, has dropped and has stayed constant. I still only have 50% kidney function, but the addition of extra protein (mostly in the form of walnuts, peanuts, and several eggs per week), seems to help keep bg levels from spiking as well as not harming my creatine clearance. Guest guest
Hi Bil, There is nothing wrong having orange juice when having a hypoglycemic reaction. You want liquid as it's easier and faster to absorb the sugar needed to bring b.g. levels up. The problem with juice is when people use juice instead of fresh fruit with their meals because fresh fruit has fiber which slows down the absorption rate of the sugars. Guest guest
Ruth, What you are saying about OJ may be true up to a point, but I've been of the mindset that taking orange juice to get out of a hypoglycemic reaction will bring you up and then way over your normal level because it's still mostly sugar. Yes you would get out of the low but then swing to the other end of the pendulum and then have to wait for it to gradually return to normal.
