A-Fib/A Flutter

I had quite a debate with my family Dr. last evening. (we are friends - going to

Mexico w/them on Sat.) regarding A-Fib & A-Flutter.

He was under the impression that A Flutter was more severe than A-fib. It is my

understanding that A-Fib is more severe than A Flutter, & in fact A Flutter can

be a precursor to A Fib. Never have had A flutter to my knowledge, just (just !)

A-Fib.

I told him he was a quack & didn't know what he was talking about ! Do I owe him

an apology ? (the debate was all in fun - we're still on for Mexico !)

Any & all feedback would be appreciated !

I think you may need to eat at least some humble pie Thor.

My understanding is that it depends :) Although Atrial Flutter

is apparently easier to fix it can be an exceedingly unpleasant

thing to have. 2:1 or even 1:1 atrial flutter can lead to very

high rates.

Since the atria continue to beat in flutter I'm guessing this

will put more stress on the heart than the quivering equivalent

of fibrillation (but this is only a guess on my part rather

than something I've read)

I think the stroke risk for flutter is thought to be lower (but I also

think you'll be hard pushed to find as much research on this subject

for people specifically with Flutter as you will for AFib)

Enjoy you trip and enjoy you debates :)

I have A flutter (and am getting an ablation within the next month -

just awaiting the date). My E.P. tells me that neither is

really " worse " than the other. It depends on the individual and

their risk factors (age, health, etc.) A flutter is a more " curable "

condition because it generally comes from a specific part of the

heart. This is why many EP's recommend ablations as a first line

treatment for A flutter for the right candidates. Atrial flutter can

be a precursor to Afib but that isn't always the case.
