Guest guest Posted April 17, 2004 Report Share Posted April 17, 2004 , Remember the movie " Gone with the Wind " where the ladies took a nap in the hot afternoon and the houses all had high ceilings and big windows. Now there is air conditioning. People just don't get out much in the heat when the humidity is high. Too hard to breathe as you said. The evenings (and just after dark) are usually the most pleasant time even into the Summer. Some people get up early before the heat gets bad and do outside work before 9AM. My parents lived in Louisiana. Dr. told my Mother not to be out in the garden after 9AM. She was not exercising, just working in the garden (exercise enough). I have a cousin in Tucson, Arizona. I like the dry climate. No one gets outside there from about mid morning to early evening unless they have good A/C in the car and going to an air conditioned place. The nights were wonderful. cool, clear skies. I live in Texas. Currently in two places. One about 40 miles East of Houston. Very humid and lots of pollution from chemical plants. I don't like being outside there anytime. Something is always in the air that bothers me. The house is between 3 chemical plants and only a few miles to a 4th very large plant. Our other place in near Central Texas is better. We are just blocks from Lake Somerville. At times the humidity is high here in the mornings if wind is off lake. It gets awfully hot here in the summer but does not feel as bad as Baytown and we don't have the air pollution. We are building a building (to be living quarters). We have already gone to what Doug calls " Tropical Hours " from the Navy. Get up about 5:30 and be ready to go to work by 6:30 or 7 at the latest. Work until lunch. After lunch, shower and take a nap. Late afternoon begin working again until dark. TV is re-runs most of the time anyway. Hope you get adjusted to it. Summer is not here yet. If you think it cannot get any worse, stick around it does, Summer in the South. As have a low tolerance for heat, humidity, and vermin, I didn't care for it very much. I was born in Michigan and grew up in Minnesota; I've lived in Oklahoma, Georgia, Arkansas, Kentucky, North Carolina and now West Virginia, and I HATE summer heat. (WV & NC are cold enough to be uncomfortable, but not cold enough to have any fun.)
