Search messages

Can anyone tell me how to enable the search feature so I can use

keywords to search all of the previous messages? When I attempt to

search using a keu word, it appears the search engine only deals

with a limited number of prior messages(~200).

Hi Tom;

You are already doing pretty well if you can get the search feature

to scan through 200 messages. On my computer only 30 messages are

scanned at once, and one must keep clicking the " Previous " button to

continue the search back through the archives. It seems that as soon

as one clicks on a message of interest, the thread of the search is

lost and one must start over. But perhaps I am making a mistake and

someone else in the group who is adept at using the search function

could enlighten us both? There is an enormous collection of

information in the approx. 64,000 messages stored in the

archives .... it would be nice to be better able to " mine " this

information.

I find the search very limited also. But clicking on " Next " is

essential to continue the search until you find messages containing

your keyword(s). If you look at a message, using the browsers " Back "

button will return you to the search - often with a increased set of

messages searched and a corresponding longer list of message " hits " .

One other technique is to have 2 browser windows open, conduct the

search in one and read the selected messages in the other. Then it is

possible to jump around in the " reading " window to look at other

related posts or to follow threads of the conversations (postings).

Thanks Tim; these are excellent tips that will make mining the

archives much easier! I wish I had known about these clever tricks

months ago!
