Guest guest Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 In Michigan you can buy a few varieties of the Ener-G breads at Kroger. I've also found mixes at Meijer that you can bake yourself (and one for brownies). Bread What bread can I buy at the local store for my daughter. Quote
Guest guest Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 I like the mix from Made By Mona....either the Honey or the Goddess breads....mmmmm...it is very good 'white' bread (actually both are sort of beige colored) I like the Manna From too, to me it's VERY much like wheat bread which I prefer, but it's made from bean flour and we can't handle too much of it! ;-) The MBM breads are a nice happy medium between white bread and wheat. MBM also has THE BEST cake mix out there. I've made cupcakes out of it and WOW. I honestly cannot tell the difference between this and " real " cake. My son is 3, was diagnosed last June at 2 1/2 (I cannot believe it's only been less than a year...seems like we've been doing this forever!!) and he likes the cupcakes for snack, and he also likes crackers (we use Blue Diamond Nut Thins or we just found Back To Nature cheese crackers that are excellent) and cheese. Trail mix with peanuts, cashews, craisins (he will not eat raisins, but LOVES craisins), the Environkidz rice crispy bars (peanut butter and chocolate are his two favorites) I guess tell us what you usually do for snacks, and I bet we can come up wiht some great " mocks " or even just specific brands that actually are ok. Guest guest Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 For our little one and snacks I give her popcorn, caramel corn, fresh fruit, rice cakes(the flavored ones are her favorite), fruit snacks, yogurt, chips, lots of different candies, rice cereal treats made from Fruity Pebbles, marshmallows, GF cookies, and nuts. One thing I found is that I had to start of with thinking of things she could not have but then I had to change my thinking to things she could have! Once I changed my focus it made it a fun challenge to find things she could have. Our doctor advised us pretty early on to not look at what she can have but what she can have. It really made a difference in her attitude as well. Our older children are not on the GF diet so for the times they have treats she cannot have we have special ones that she can that are at least as good if not better than theirs. They are 11 and 14 so they understand why it has to be that way and they also enjoy finding things for her. I hope that these ideas help. -----Original Message-----From: SillyYaks [mailto:SillyYaks ]On Behalf Of RARARL@...Sent: Wednesday, May 04, 2005 4:44 PMTo: SillyYaks Subject: Re: Bread I don't know where you live, but have you checked with your local natural foods grocery store to see what they might carry? Guest guest Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 Yes, I've eaten the Orville Redenbacher ones without any problems and that's what I mixed up when I accidently bought the Quaker one in the same flavor... I'm not as sensitive when it comes to cross-contamination as some but for some reason the Quaker brand hit me hard!! April, if you find a brand that is found to be GF and your little one tolerates well just be sure to note which one it is stick to that. Guest guest Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 April, I think my son must be super sensitive with a few products. We have to be real careful. After being gf over a year now, we have had to delete fruity pebbles, cocoa pebbles, and dyno bites from his diet. He really gets out of control if he gets even a little of these cereals. Does anyone else see a difference in a small child who eats these cereals? Please let me know as I really want to try something he will actually eat that he likes as well. Guest guest Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 Lauretta--If your son is having a behavioral reaction after eating these cereals, it is most likely caused by the artificial color, flavor, or preservative BHT, whichever is added to the cereal. This is a VERY common response to "artificials", but most parents chalk it up to normal kid behavior, or don't even notice it at all, much less are observant enough to connect it to the food their child ate. It's wonderful you noticed his responses and were able to realize they were food related! Marilyn Quote

Guest guest Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 All the bags of cereal I have at home are safe. I'm trying to get my hands on more of them for the future. According to Malt-O-Meal, this change will happen in 3-4 months, but the production of the "new" cereal additive has not occured yet. Atleast this is what I was told. Guest guest Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 The Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles do not list any of the gluten sources and as a Kraft product they say they will list them clearly. There is no Malt flavorings or anything. They are a lifesaver for my daughter! What about Safeway's version of the cocoa pebbles? Are they safe? Thanks, Quote
Guest guest Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 I rushed out to Safeway and read the ingredients for both Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles and you are right, they are GF. This is wonderful. When my sons were diagnosed at the beginning of this year, I called all the major cereal brands and asked for their GF cereal list. I was given mis information because I was told that they did not have any cereal that was GF. When I found Malt-o-Meal brand, I never bothered to look at the Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles again. I guess even at 4 months into their GF diet, I have a lot to learn. I read all labels, but when I'm told that a product is not GF, I have not questioned it. You learn something new every day. Thanks for the information. Are most caramels, ie. the caramels used for caramel apples sold in the stores GF? I don't think so, but haven't checked it out yet. Guest guest Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 I have heard somewhere that Brachs is not GF and I am not sure of the others. She has started eating okay and has started trusting food again so I do not want her to have problems. I wish that candy companies would not put flours in their candies when it really isn't necessary. but I am also soooo thankful for companies that have some great options! When I do get caught with out any treats for her somewhere we promise her a trip to the store for a Snickers and she is happy again! Quote
