Hello Amber

Are you talking about his entire head, like a skin reaction, or like

a reaction from pressure. Maybe your ortho should look at this.

I'm not sure and your Dr. doesn't know either? It is all over like a

rash? Is it itchy?

If the fit is fine (maybe get in to see your orthotist soon), and it

is a heat/other-type rash maybe try the Aveeno oatmeal bath, make a

little paste, slather it on and rinse off.

Good luck and please let us know.

Hi. I did see the orthotist today, and he didn't know why it was

happening. Yes, it's his whole head, not just pressure. We'll

watch it for a few days. Our pediatrician thinks it could just be

heat rash.

Hi there

I can't say for sure what it is, but it might be just a really bad

heat rash. My daughter had them when going into the band, and it

made the first few days really difficult, I really worried that she

woudln't be able to wear it.

The good news is that if it is heat rash (enormous bright red

patches, itchy, xometimes white spots in the centre, looks really

angry but does go after a couple of hours), then it is easy to

solve. You need to keep your little one as cool as possible, so that

means turning the central heating down (so you are cool), putting

them in light cotton clothing, the absolute minimum like a onside,

no socks, and taking the helmet off every few hours for an air, wipe

it down and dry their hair too. You can always dress warmer when you

go outside. I also limited Lucia's time in the jumping swing (do you

call this a jumperoo?!) to when the helmet was off as she would get

overheated. I used air con constantly in that summer, it really was

the only way Lucia could wear her helmet- those helmets are

completely insulating- it may have been that the doctors office,

plus sitting on your lap was way too hot for your little one.

Not all children react so much to the extra heat of the helmet- you

may have one twin that does and one that doesn't!!! Lucia took about

a month or more to adjust to the increased heat (and she never

sweated heavily, just came out in constant heat rashes if hot), but

other adjust quicker. If it is heat rash, however, it will look

drastic, but is easy to fix, so don't panic.

I was also told by my specialist to go easy on the alcohol. You

might be desperate to clean the stink from the sweat, but if you use

too much (it should just make the cloth damp, not wet and really

scrub away), this will aggravate some sensitive scalps as well. Make

srue it is completely dried before replacing the helmet, and just do

it once a day until any scalp problems have died down.

I hope that this helps- of course, it may not be heat rash and could

be a much rarer reaction, so do revisit your doctor if you are

concerned, however lots of people do seem to have very similar

problems in the early days, and cooling the babies right

down/cutting down on the alcohol (not you, you probably need a stiff

drink!) does seem to sort them out.

Do let us know how this goes, you sound like you are doing a great

job.

Thank you so much for your email. That's really what my

pediatrician thought. It kind of made me nervous that the orthotist

didn't suggest this an a cause. We'll take off the helmet about

every four hours to wipe off his head and let him get some air.

Luckily, it's starting to get cold here, so I hope it won't be so

bad.

Your email really made me relax about the whole thing!

Thank you,

Amber W.
