Congratualations of Rose's progress! I'm so glad to hear that her foot is

continueing to do so well! I too always feel so reassured when we visit Dr.

Ponseti even if I feel everything is still going OK, it's nice to hear it

from him in person.

I think at times even family members and friends make remarks that were not

meant to hurt but surely do come out wrong! Some things are just hard to

imagine unless you've been there yourself, you know!

Anyway, that is really strange about Rose's loose joints. I actually have

been having second thoughts about 's, she just really does'nt seem

loose jointed to me (of course I'm not a doctor though either!) I am really

looking forward to our next trip to go over some of this stuff again with

Dr. Ponseti. does'nt have the hyperextended knees that you and

have mentioned but he said in her wrists and ankles she is loose. Did he

give you any new info regarding the loose joints?

is supposed to be taken out of the DBB at our next visit which is in a

couple of weeks. She's only been in it now a year and I'm nervous about her

not wearing it anymore.

Did Dr. Ponseti compare Rose's calf to her other one to come to the

conclusion that it was smaller? I wonder how you would measure on a

bilateral baby? I've been curious on and off about 's calves, I think

they are a little thinner than maybe they normally would have been from

having 16 casts.

Well, congrats again! Oh, and I counted 4 babies now that have the loose

joints. It still amazes me that a clubfoot baby can be loose jointed, weird

is'nt it!

Congratulations Joy, what great news!!! I am hoping we will be done with the

FAB soon too. Dr. Colburn said at our last visit that he'd see Jordan once

more when he's two! He said Jordan's very flexible and shows no signs of

regression; and then proceeded to bend his thumb nearly to his

forearm--something I've never tried. He stopped short of saying that he has

" loose joints " .

, I'm so happy for you. We are so lucky to have such a fine doctor

available to us. Isn't Dr. Colburn amazing? He's so low key that it's like

chit-chatting with a family member (perhaps even better!!).

Today during our walk, Jordan and I paused to pet a puppy. The dog's owner

looked at Jordan and said, " He must be 2 or 2 1/2? " I said, " Jordan's a few

days short of eighteen months, but he's tall and he's got allot of hair and

that throws people off. " She said, " Yes, but he's also walking really well

for 18 months. " I could have kissed her!! Then, naturally, I launched into

our bilateral clubfoot story. Jordan started walking at 14 months; I walked

at 14 months so nothing has delayed that milestone.

Jordan has very small calves, but that runs in our family. My

great-grandfather's nickname was " birdlegs " (and it's mine). He was so

embarrassed by his skinny legs that he never wore shorts! Since Jordan is

bilateral it's hard for me to tell how big they would be normally. He's got

some beefy thighs though. Probably from clubbing the rest of us daily with

all of his clubfoot correction paraphernalia.

Anyway, congrats to Rose and !! Yeehaa!!

doctor seemed very happy with the appearance and movement. It was

very refreshing to hear that her clubfoot was doing as well as I thought

it was.

When I was talking to my sister about how good Rose's foot was looking,

she asked me if I was upset at 'wasting' a trip to Iowa City just to

have Dr. P tell me that all was well. I definitely told her it was NOT

a wasted trip. To hear that all is well is just too good to hear.

The trip went surprising well with both Rose and Iris, and we had a very

enjoyable visit with , and Jakob!! It was great to see you

again, and family!!

from her right foot. Dr. Ponseti did remark that Rose's calf was

CONGRATULATIONS!! What wonderful news. You were talking about loose

joints, does this seem to be a common thing with clubfoot or

something? I've noticed 's left shoulder seems to pop

sometimes, I was going to ask Dr. Dobbs about this at the next

visit. is doing very well, thanks for asking. He's back to

his little piglet self. I still think he is still sometimes

uncomfortable though because he is just fussier than usual. But I

would be too if my tendons were cut and my feet were stretched around

farther than ever. So just extra TLC and a still some Tylenol here

and there. Again Congrats on your wonderful news, can you believe

the day is actually here?

common thing to occur with clubfoot, but surprisingly, there are at

least four of us here. I would love to know how common it is and what

Thanks! We are doing fine! is 15 months old now and has been

walking well for over a month. Her foot seems to be doing great. I

caught her squatting the other day with both heels flat on the floor,

which was great to see.. In the past I have been worried about the

stretch in her heel, so seeing her able to do that was reassuring.

(Her tenotomy was done before we switched to Dr. P, and although he

has said her heel is tighter than it could have been, he has said it

is adequate. It has continued to concern me anyway.. Guess I have to

have something to worry about!)

She's still using the brace during sleep, at naps and night.

She's a lot of fun.. really starting to express her opinion lately ..

toddlerhood is in full swing!

I'll be interested to hear how does and if you go to completely

brace-free life or just partial time.. Hope you all are well.

I honestly don''t think the kiddos are loose jointed. I believe that

hyperextending the foot out to 90 degrees overstretches the tendons. I also

think this is a good thing.

In fact, yesterday we had Quinn's appointment with Dr. Wilkins. Quinn is a

walking fool now, and I wanted Dr. W. to see him in action. We had a wonderful

report, and will only need to see him every 6 months now. During the

appointment, I was a bit nervous because for the last month or so, I have been

rotating Quinn's DBB out to 70 degrees, sometimes to 90 degrees. He was pulling

his forefoot in, and I just wanted to see what would happen....well, he doesn't

do it anymore. His foot is gorgeous. I told Dr. W. and he said " Great. He

gets a good stretch like that and it seems to have really helped his forefoot

adduction. Keep it up as long as he will tolerate it. "

So. Don't worry about the loose joints. It is a good thing. When the

posterior tibial is stretched like that, it inactivates it somewhat and allows

for the perineals(sp?) to pull the foot out. Because it is so stretched out, it

doesn't work as well, and that is what we want..........that muscle is one of

the main buggers responsible for regression.

If what you have said is true about the posterior tibial being over

stretched and that it is good and keeps that main muscle from tightening,

would the muscle want to tighten up again if the stretching is

eliminated?(For us, if the DBB is eliminated.) What about all of the other

joints in the body that seem to be loose, is that not an indication in your

opinion of looser than normal joints? From what I understood, for , the

loose joints that she has makes it easier to maintain the corrected

possitions of her feet and therefor they would'nt have the tendency to want

to go back to their origional possitions. That and also Dr. Ponseti wants to

avoid any other problems with leaving the DBB on too long. He mentioned flat

foot as one possible potential problem.

I'm just trying to learn anything I can about the loose joints and found

what you had said interesting.

Hi Joy,

We're on at the same time! I'm so glad that Iris was such a good girl for

you on the trip. We usually had lots of crying...........but it was from our

3 year old! always slept through most of the trips. Thank god!

Rose takes after her daddy's side with the skinny legs. On my side, we

all have short, muscular legs. I'm about 5'2 " and there are no skinny

legs on me!! I've often wished, though... Iris sounds like ,

all roly poly. I adore the round cheeks! I just think they are

I got me a teething baby, too!!! Iris has been so bad as to wake up

every half hour the last couple of nights. I tried Motrin, and it

worked some. Rose is such a light sleeper, so I'm moving from room to

room in a zombie state this past week. Iris " sleeps " with us part of

the night, so I'm not getting much sleep. I was going to go to bed

early, but i just had to answer a few questions!

Yes, the ride to Iowa was a surprise. We left at 4 in the morning, so I

think that threw them for a loop. Iris hates the car and usually

hollers. I think we had some divine intervention and great timing.

I hope your trip to Iowa is a wonderful and quiet one.

Yes, after time, the muscle will pull back in a bit. But that is why, as

has said, Dr. Ponseti overcorrects....it will regress back to a normal position

from hypercorrection.

My opinion is that you are prolly very observant and if you see any significant

changes, I know you will be right on it. That is prolly what your doc already

knows, so he trusts that you will keep an eye on it. I know he would not have

taken out of the DBB if she was not ready. Just keep your eyes peeled.

But most of all....enjoy your success. You guys deserve it after all your hard

work.

Children naturally have loose joints. Some more than others. I can flex

Quinn's normal foot until the top of his foot touches his shin. His thumbs

also bend way back. My 7 year old is more rigid, but he was just as flexible

when he was little.

From what I have read, when you over stretch the posterior tib muscle, it

shortens the perineals (sp?) which in turn helps them work better. Clubfoot

involves the muscles and ligaments. They are the reason the foot is clubbed.

The muscles and tendons are what make the joints move. So, since clubfoot is

basically shortened gastroc and posterial tibialis groups, I am not sure how a

clubfoot can have loose joints in that foot. The tendons are what keep the

foot from hyperextending too much. In clubfoot, they are, what I would call,

retracted somewhat. Those muscles are overactive and pull the foot in.

Even if you have loose joints, clubfoot is clubfoot. If it is neurological in

origin, the clubfoot condition would dominate over the tendency to be flexible.

Now, that is MHO, so certainly not the gospel.
