High ammonia levels in and of themselves do not mean that you have

hepatic encephalopathy. Memory loss is very subjective unless and until

it can be formally tested by a psychologist or other specialist using

specific testing protocols. You should be tested after stopping the

lactulose. If there is no evidence of hepatic encephalopathy (and by

the way, a live in partner or spouse can confirm this diagnosis without

testing) you won't need lactulose. If HE is present than there are

other treatments possible, such as Neomycin, a non-absorbed oral

antibiotic. Get checked or ask your wife/partner if you have one.
