Hi, -

Welcome to the group!

I'm guessing that you don't live in the US (the Bequerel unit of RAI was

the giveaway; we use the Curie .... 1850 mBq = 50 mCi, a moderate ablative

dose).

Is this your first scan since your ablation in '99? If so, I might

question using Thyrogen (see the recent discussion on the list; another

member asked about Thyrogen for a follow up scan. Go to

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Thyca/messages/18997?viscount=-30 and begin

with message #18993, " Thyrogen for follow up body scans " . Then browse

through the list for the continuation of the discussion.)

Going on a low iodine diet is an excellent suggestion; the doctors who

contribute to this list all instruct their patients to follow the LID for 2

weeks before ingesting the RAI for a scan or ablation. The principle is

simple - deplete any existing thyroid cells (malignant, or benign remnant)

of nutritional iodine, and they will soak up the RAI more readily. You

can read more about it at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Thyca/message/15575 ( " LID - why bother? " ).

In fact, there is an index to some archived letters on the LID (including

the diet itself) at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Thyca/message/17607.

The low iodine diet gets a lot of attention on this list; it's really not

that difficult for most of us, but it does require a bit of deprivation of

some favorite foods, and also some brain work, which is not so easy for a

hypo person. Everyone who has been on the LID as a hypo person and then

not (before a Thyrogen scan) has said that it is SO much easier when not

off meds.

Good luck, and ask any questions that come to mind.
