Shari,

What kind of helmet is it again? What kind of powder are you using

on it? Are you making sure the helmet (and her head) is completely

dry before putting it back on her?

Hi-

Hannah has a hanger helmet and we are using johnsons baby powder

with cornstarch to put inside. When we give her a bath at night we

usually blow dry her hair on cool air so we know it is perfectly dry

before putting the helmet back on. We use the drier so quickly b/c

her hair dries in a snap. What do you think?

Hi there

Our specialist advised us to use very little alcohol when cleaning,

so that the cloth or whatever you use is just damp, not wet, and

scrub really hard. He said lots of red patches and irritation are

caused by this. My daughter had an itchy scalp as well, and plenty

of people on this site seem to swear by the Aveeno oatmeal paste

which you mix up and leave on in the bath, which is very

moisturising. I just cut back on the alcohol ( to clean the helmet,

not my own supply!) and used an eczema shampoo which seemed to help

enormously with the irritation.

Hi Shari,

With DOCbands you aren't supposed to use any powders b/c they get

into the helmet foam and can irritate the skin. Have you tried it

w/out the powder? There is also a powder called Zeasorb that we've

had recommended to other members before that seemed to work well.

I'd just make sure that helmet is cleaned well and good and dry

before you put it back on her and see if the area gets better. A

little hydrocortisone cream may be helpful on it--you could check

w/your ortho. Let us know.

I would try not to use powder at all. It can possibly create some

abrasion to her skin. We used the Aveeno oatmeal paste/bath once

when he had a prickly heat type of rash and it worked great. We also

used 0.5% hydrocortisone once or twice in the beginning and then

never had a problem after that. Make sure that the foam is

completely dry before putting it back on her. And as always, call

your orthotist if if doesn't get better soon! Good luck.
