The reason you don't see many, if any plagio adults is because we

were all belly sleepers. I personally know an adult with plagio. His

Mom had him when he was very young and from what I hear he spent a

lot of time in his crib and in his car seat.

Plagio has become an epidemic since the back to sleep campaign began

back in I believe 1992.

I'm a hairdresser and there are alot of older people even 80 who have

severe Plagio and I have a customer with tort and hes 50, his hea7ds

is realy bad from plagio and his ears are still off. I see lots of

little kids with a flat spot too that shows even when the hair is

shorter. My daughter is 5 and you can still see her flat spot if you

know how to spot it (plagio police...lol).

I found this paper by Rekate particularly interesting if you would

like to obtain it from your library:

Rekate. Occipital plagiocephaly: a critical review of the

literature. J Neurosurg 1998, 89, 24-30.

Excerpt:

" If vigorously investigated, facial asymmetry can be found in a

relatively large number of adults. Plagiocephaly severe enough to be

acknowledged by patients themselves appears to be exceedingly rare. "

It goes on to state that hair stylists, orthodontists, and

ophthalmologists did not recognize it as a problem with which they

were required to deal, however " oculists " were more aware of it as

they often adjust glasses so that one ear piece is shorter than the

other.

Hope this helps. For a complete listing of papers related to plagio,

Once in awhile we have a adult join with their story. I see facial

asymetry and tort all the time on tv now. My stepdad is the middle

child of 7 kids, back to back, and he has pretty significant brachy.

My brother and I were born 1 year apart in 1970 and 1971. My Mom

brother slept on his back all of the time and he has severe brachy

w/o facial assemetry. As a result, my Mom left me on my tummy to

sleep and I have a round head. I never noticed that my brother's

head was flat, despite wearing short hair all of his life, until my

Mom mentioned it when my Son was diagnosed a few months ago.
