Joanne,

Recent research that has been published just in the last few years

cites an increased risk of certain problems for babies with

plagiocephaly. We have links to these studies summaries here at the

group site in the Links/Plagiocephaly Studies and Research folder,

if you'd like to browse through the list and read some of them.

Problems mentioned are auditory processing disorders, visual field

development problems, mandibular asymmetry, astigmatism, adult sleep

apnea, and possible long term delays. Only one study, published

February 2000, did show evidence of statistically significant delays

among the school-age plagiocephaly population, and does mention

speech therapy specifically. Here is a link to that study:

Long-Term Developmental Outcomes in Patients With Deformational

Plagiocephaly (Feb. 2000)

http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/105/2/e26

Interestingly, there was a follow-up study to this study presented

earlier this year, I believe, at an orthotics industry meeting.

However, its presentation was apparently preliminary, and being

offered up for peer review - unfortunately this follow-up study has

not been published or made available to the general public just

yet. It is such an important topic that would be of great interest

to our group, so I hope we are able to get this new information soon!

I'm not educated on speech delays by any stretch, but perhaps the

study showing auditory processing disorders could also be relevant

(you'll need to copy and paste the entire link to your address bar

to get directed correctly since it's more than one line long):

Auditory ERPs Reveal Brain Dysfunction in Infants with Plagiocephaly

(pub. Jul. 2002)

In the current study we demonstrated, for the first time, that the

central sound processing, as reflected by ERPs, is affected in

children with plagiocephaly.
