Guest guest
Hi. I am new to this group. My 4 month old has torticollis and plagiocephaly. The physical therapist states it isn't classic torticollis because he only has trouble tilting and not turning his head. Also, he has one cheek that is much smaller than the other and the lower lip has moved over to the right side some and is off center. I am looking through some of the photos on this site trying to see if the lower lip being off center is very common. I can't seem to find any other child w/ this, but haven't gone through every photo. If you know of anyone that had this lip shift situation or about it, I'd feel so much better knowing that it is something that may get better with the helmet or w/physical therapy, positioning etc. THANKS! I still need to post a photo of my Owen. Robin
Guest guest
Hello Robin, Welcome to the group! I have not read of a lip shift like you describe but I have heard some parents discuss asymmetrical gum lines. Can't wait to see pictures of your cutie! Natasha > Hi. Guest guest
Welcome, Robin! I recently saw an article at Cranial Tech that studied tort, since most of CT's patients have " neck involvement. " The study showed that most babies do not have congenital muscular torticollis, or CMT, but rather have a weak SCM on the opposite side of the tilt. Something like 80% of the babies with a tilt in the study had the weak muscle, not CMT. The baby can turn its head to the tort side, just can't hold its head up straight and therefore tilts. Apparently the one weaker SCM has never been that uncommon (so goes the theory) but most babies used to tummy sleep and got lots of tummy time round the clock, so they were forced to develop the weak muscle and it would even up on its own. Now that babies are back sleeping, they are getting less tummy time and the weakened muscle doesn't get stronger by itself. Interesting, huh? I have not personally seen the lip shift you mention, so I'm sorry I can't be more help there. , 21 mos, DOC Grad 9/7 > > > Hi. Guest guest
Hi Robin, Welcome to the group. My dd also mostly had tilt and not ROM (range of motion) issues. It still took us from age 3 - 13 months to correct. It requires the same emphasis on stretching and strengthening. I have heard of crooked jaws due to plagio so if it's his jaw that is causing the lip apperance the band should help. If it's related to the tort then working on the stretching and strengthening will help. It's most likely a combo of both. We did have one little boy who had a crooked gum line. mom to na DOC Grad TORT Resolved SC www.thefilyaws.com --- In Plagiocephaly , " rjsnobbin " <robincollins@v...> wrote: > Hi.
