I am 50 years old, hashimotos, hypothyroidism, vitiligo

December 1987 I had hysterectomy for abnormal cells on the cervix

which had been treated for 2 years with cryosurgery and waiting and

it just kept coming back. Because of family history it was decided

hysterectomy was the best option. I already had 3 children + 1 step

daughter. This was back in the " old " days when you went in the

hospital the night before surgery and they did blood tests, the

Doctor came in the morning and sent me home because my thyroid was so

low, he said if he operated then that I wouldn't have made it off the

table, put on high thyroid dose for 1 month and then had surgery.

Took over a year to heal internally (think maybe the thyroid dose

wasn't optimized ??)

Anyway put on synthroid and stayed on that for 14 years, felt lousy,

depressed, put on weight etc. Took prozac for 2 winters made things

worse, told to go home and take it easy, what do you expect with 3

children under five of course you are tired. Should have clued in

then but was raised that Doctors were Gods.

Finally 2 1/2 years ago decided I had enough and decided to start

looking after myself. The old Doctor retired and I found a new one

who is willing to work with me.

He ran thyroid antibody and told me I have Hashimotos.

I also had him run some more tests last week my ferritin is at 4, B12

is low and hemoglobin is low.

TSH 1.42 range (.2-6.)

Free T3 5.1 range (2.7-5.7)

Free T4 7.9 range (8-22)

This was on 150 mg dessicated thyroid (supposed to be equal to

armour)

I have since upped thyroid by 1/4 grain.

Am taking vege based iron, B12, B complex and multivitamin + calcium-

potassium, magnesium combo.

Been on the iron for 6 days now and already am feeling better.

Would like some advice as to the low Free T4, I thought T3 & T4 were

suposed to both be in the high normal range.

Oh! I am also in menopause and just started with natural progestrone

cream, (sore breasts, night sweats )

The more I learn about this thyroid the more I realize that I have

probably had it long before it was diagnosed.

Thanks for listening and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and thanks ! I actually got ahold of Pfizer Canada yesterday,

and they DO make " THYROID " . They call it thyroid hormone. If you don't

want to go to a compounding pharmacy, you can get these (I will bet)

for a lot cheaper. After I got that info, I did find a Canadian

pharmacy that selld to the US, and you can get 500 tablets for about

$50 US, so I would imagine us Canadians can get it cheaper than that.

Thanks again!

The best B-12 to take is the sublingual " methyl " type...more than

likely you have an absorption problem so you would want to take it

under the tongue to get it directly into the blood

stream.....iherb.com has some great brands of it....can't usually

find it in the stores....methylcobalmin (sp?)....Jarrow brand is what

we get.....1000 mcg a day....also take some extra doses of folic acid

if you aren't already......sue

Welcome,

When you had your hysterectomy, unless they left your ovaries, you

went into menopause at that time.

With no uterus you might not need progesterone.
