Guest guest
Hi, My 4 month old son is going to be fitted with a DOC band next week. I was wondering if the band interferes with breastfeeding? I currently feed him using a boppy pillow and his head always gets hot. Do I take the band off for feedings or leave it on? Also do you take the band on and off for dressing? How do you get onesies over their heads otherwise? I know these seem like silly questions but I was curious what other people had experienced. Thanks,
Guest guest
Hi : I don't know what to tell about the breastfeedding, But regarding to get them dress with the band on I can tell you that in our case it depends on the outfit I'm making wear. For example if the shirt has a very open neck and can easily pass through the helmet I just leave it on, if the shirt neck is small I take the helmet of, get him dressed and the put the helment back on. It takes only one minute so it wont make any deference. In my case is pretty easy though because seems not to even realize that he has somenthing on his head LOL. I canput it on and take it off as many times as I can and he don't even seems to realize what is happening over his head LOL. Good luck!! Guest guest
I nursed while my son was in a DOC band -- though it covered more of his head than a traditional band because he had a long-narrow headshape. Sometimes I used a Boppy around my waist to support him -- used this even before we banded though (at almost 7 months) so he was used to it. http://www.boppy.com/ He did start solids (and still nursed) around the same time as us starting the band. It could be that he's still trying to get used to his band, or depending on his age, he could be in the beginning stages of teething... hang in there! Good luck with whatever you try.mom to Quinn, born 11/99, DOCband grad 10/00 for scaphocephalic head shape.>------- Original Message ------->From : peishanz04[mailto:peishanz04@...]>Sent : 1/24/2008 11:54:44 AM>To : Plagiocep haly >Cc : >Subject : RE: Breastfeeding and DOC band>>Does anyone breastfeed a baby that has to wear a DOC band ? Guest guest
Have you tried nursing him laying down or with him on a pillow? We never really had too many nursing issues but I cant say it was extremely confortable for me when I just held him to nurse with his band digging into my arm. However we didnt nurse like that often, only when out, when at home ne nursed laying on a pillow propped on the sofa end (a habit we got into during repositioning, I had thought a pillow was softer than my arm and was willing to try anything) or he nursed before nap or bed or during the night, all of which I did laying in my bed. Guest guest
Thank you for your reply. I am willing to try anything. (my son) only 6mths old. We are now nursing almost every 2 hrs because he can't nurse well and becomes hungry often; unlike before, he only nurse every 4 to 5 hrs. It is hard to see him in the Band, and even worst when I know that he is hungry constantly due to the band... Hopefully, this is just our adjustment period, and will pass soon... > > > Does anyone breastfeed a baby that has to wear a DOC band ? Can you > > help me ? Guest guest
Hey! Sorry to hear you are having problems. My ds is 5 months but as big as most 7 month olds, I noticed that he had a hard time nursing in our rocking chair once he got the band. I think being crunched up made the band dig into his neck, and have a wierd head angle. So I started nursing him on the couch cross leged with hinnie on one knee and head on a pillow and arm over the other. I always end up with an imprint of the ear cut out on my forarm but I've never seen an ear print. He seems to be much more comfy with the extra space. He also needed a lot of burping and reattachments at first. Hope that helps. Kamipeishanz04 <peishanz04@...> wrote: Thank you for your reply.I am willing to try anything. (my son) only 6mths old. Guest guest
I breastfed my dd while she wore her Hanger band. It took some getting used to but it is doable! Try laying on your side in bed - I found that to be the most comfy - or get a My Breast Friend or Boppy - those help too. Guest guest
My son was 10 months when he went into the band. It was uncomfortable for me but he seemed to do okay. He did seem to break off more often, but I started to entertain him with a toy or something. That worked for a while and then I'd have to find something new to entertain him. We stayed in the band and nursing for three months. Don't worry, it'll work out... and Aidan DOCband graduate 10/07 --- peishanz04 <peishanz04@...> wrote: > Does anyone breastfeed a baby that has to wear a DOC > band ? Can you > help me ? Guest guest
Peishan, I would call CT today to ask. And if you dont get an answer I would take it off at least a couple times a day to nurse. I think keeping your child feed and hydrated is very important, and will probably help him adjust quicker than keeping him hungry AND having to wear a helmet. I have left the band off for a night beacuse I couldn't get in touch with anyone before his bedtime because he had strange bumps on the back of his head (I thought his helmet was causing cysts) ended up they were just swollen lymph nodes following a cold. I even called the CT in AZ since they were in a diffrent time zone and still open (they did call back but he was down for the night by that time)! But truely he needs to eat.... good luck Kami Kiley 3 Keenan 5 months doc band 3 weekspeishanz04 <peishanz04@...> wrote: > > >> > > > Does anyone breastfeed a baby that has to wear a DOC band ?Can you> > > > help me ? Guest guest
I have the same thinking as yours. Would rather have a happy and fulled baby than following the rules words by words. But, my husband did keep on reminding me this might affect the rate of his head shape recovery... Really wish that I listen to my friend's advise about switching to bottle prior his band, so that I can pump and feed him from bottle... Well too late for that. Been trying to use bottle to feed him yesterday, but he didn't take much either... I am so worried and frustrated... Guest guest
I would just go with what works now and keep trying to nurse in the band. I didn't nurse, but I've been on the board for about 1.5 years and I don't remember other babies who didn't adjust to this. I think in a week or two it will get easier. -christine sydney 2 yrs starband grad > > > > > > > > > > > Does anyone breastfeed a baby that has to wear a DOC band ? > > Can you > > > > > > help me ? Guest guest
Thank you all for the tips and supports. The laying and nursing on bed work best so far. Just that, I almost fall asleep along with . And he only willing to do that when he is sleepy... We are still learning and adjusting... We are kind of use to his band now... He doesn't seem to be aware of the band unless we touch or press on it. , Brachycephaly; band 1 week > > > > > > > > > > > > > Does anyone breastfeed a baby that has to wear a DOC band ? > > > Can you > > > > > > > help me ?
