Re: Full helmet vs. band?

Hi Laurie,

The full helmets tend to be older styled and passive, meaning they

rely solely on growth and will take longer to do the same thing as

the newer active style bands. If given a choice, I'd definitely go

for a band vs. a helmet. In addition to a helmet possibly taking

longer to produce results, they look more bulky and cumbersome, and

often have chin straps. I would think they'd weigh a bit more and

make the baby sweat more too, but that I'm not sure about. You do

hear lots about the DOCbands because they are the leaders in

treating plagio and they require in depth training for their

orthotists, all monitored by a central headquarters. You just don't

get this with the other companies, which is why there are those

unfortunately horror stories of babies banded by inexperienced

orthos. As long as you know your ortho is experienced, you should

be getting correction from any band or helmet though. An

inexperienced ortho can actually lead to molding the head into a

more severe shape, so definitely do your homework. Good luck with

your appointments tomorrow and let us know what you find out.

I see some comments up already about the comparisons. We have a

(full passive) local helmet, but to reassure you (make sure you check

yours out) we have a very experienced orthotist. I agree with the

other posts that this is the most important part. They are thorough,

see you regularly and have documented experience with the helmeting.

Our son has had very little problem with sweating (unless we

overdressed him). Our full helmet has no chin strap, but it secures

on the side. I feel fine having the passive helmet vs. Doc band

because it is available to us without travel here and because our

Orthotist is very skilled.

P.S. Our son doesn't care about the helmet at all. He doesn't even

really try to touch it though he does everything else around him!

Thanks for sharing your experience with your local helmet. I think it is

helpful to hear about all the different types of bands and helmets.

Hi and welcome. We used a STARband from Orthomerica. I would call

and speak with the orthotist at both places and ask them TONS of

questions. I'm still unsure whether or not any bands/helmets are

*still* actually 'ACTIVE' vs. passive. Active meaning " applying

gentle pressure " vs. allowing natural growth to be redirected. If

you have a Cranial Technologies close by, you can't go wrong with

them. That is ALL they make (DOCbands). Good luck and keep doing

your research...

Hello Laurie

I'm not so certain about these full helmets, as I have only had

experience with an open one. I do think like though as far as

the visual goes.

We were treated here in Germany, but I've only heard the best of

CT. Maybe you can just meet both orthos, and go from there. Which

ever you feel comfortable with.

Good luck, and let us know how your appointments go.
