> I am rather confused, and wondering how you eat when wired??? mike

Hi Mike,

Well now that I'm on the other side.... I can say that eating while

being wired is no fun, but it's possible! I've actually been drinking

from a cup. It's gotten much easier.... no spills. But I can only use

plastic and small cups only. I tried a Zippie today, that was pretty

cool. You basically just put some liquid in the bag, the straw in

your mouth, and push! I don't think I would be able to suck from a

straw. The variety is the killer. I'm getting tired of ensure and

apple juice, so I tried soup today, but everything has to be really

fine liquid. Nothing heavy yet. Oh, btw, tomorrow will be one week

post op.

Thank heavens I have not had to find out, nor even about banded,

Mike. But I suspect it's like the old saw about how porcupines make

love -- verry carefully. (And probably verry little, as well.)

Whatever they give you, you'll be doing all liquids for a while -- or

at least I am. Wouldn't dare bite down on a merangue fluff, even.

Ensure, Boost, soup, juice, soup, ensure, boost, thinned custard --

you got the notion. I haven't even been interested in getting

adventurous, and I thought I'd be cooking up all sorts of neat

recipes. I'm just too pooped to bother, and, even more than that, I

don't give a hoot. As long as I don't pass out, fall and whack my

jaw, and I get enough stuff in to heal, hey - s'fine with me.

Basically, you don't. I have been wired now for 4 weeks. I read all

this stuff about blending your food to push it through a straw to

eat. Don't even try it. It just makes you more depressed and I

think you burn more calories trying to get it in than you would get

if it actually got in!! If it has any food particles whatsoever,

however small, it will clog up what holes you may have between your

teeth. And then you have to try to brush it out, which just pushes

it farther in the wires and the splint.

The best things to " drink " are clear soups, well strained. Lots of

juice. Any liquids: juice, milk, koolaid, cokes. Cokes might upset

an empty stomach though. Ensure is ok. The zip n squeeze is good

for the first few weeks, but them it is easier to use a straw. I got

one of my kids cups that holds a lot and has a closed top with a

straw. i take it everywhere.

Anyway, my wires are off in 2 days and I thank God for it!!

Hi, I have to disagree with you about using the straw to push the

food into your mouth. I was wired for 4 weeks and used the Zip and

Squeeze everyday of the 4 weeks. I just blended everything really

well and added broth or milk or water to thin whatever I was eating

to get the lumps out and get the food between my teeth. It wasn't

as difficult as I thought it would be and I did really well with my

weight. I lost at first because I just wasn't hungry but after 2

weeks I kept my weight on an even keel. I'm sorry you didn't have a

good experience with it but also want people that are going to be

wired to know that you can do it and do it well. The Zippies were a

Godsend for me and I wouldn't have gotten through it without them.

I was not allowed to suck on a straw for the first 4 weeks so that

was not an option for me. I'm not saying that there weren't things

that were hard to eat but I just dumped them or added more liquid

and tried again. There is no need to eat clear soups, Ensure and

juice for 4 to 8 weeks, I ate everything the others in my family

were eating.

Hi Mina, I was where you are a little more than 4 months ago. I

sympathize and hope you are going well with it. Try some good

recipes and you will feel a lot better about the wiring. My

favorite was (I apologize to those that have heard this a hundred

times before) refried beans with cheese, sour cream, enchilada sauce

and chicken broth. Mix the beans and cheese on stove until cheese

melts. Add sour cream and enchilada sauce to taste. Blend with

enough chicken broth to get through the Zip n Squeeze. It's

wonderful and I ate it everyday. I would even make triple and

quadruple recipes of it to keep in the fridge. Just heat until warm

in microwave and add chicken broth to thin.

I also ate everything my family ate, just blended with broth or milk

or even water to make it squeezable. I was not allowed to suck on a

straw until 4 weeks post-op so the Zippies were the best.

Good luck and, if you need anymore ideas for food just let me know.
