Jaxson's CranioCap did not get loose after any time- in fact, it got tighter, thus having to have a bigger gap between where the velcro is. The red mark across her forhead, does that go away or does it stay red after you take it off? Bright red or just pink? You don't want that red mark to stay, possibly breaking skin and then having to leave the cap off. But, you also don't want it too loose. Give the ortho a call. Now yesterday I took the helmet off at 9am and told my hubby to put back on at 10am and I left. Well I came back at noon and she still had it off (guys for yeah, ha? LOL). But she still had the red mark after 3 hrs. I did tighten all the way after that and of course it is not red now today-but it is also loose again. ahhhh! I just wondered if becoming loose was normal. Guest guest Posted April 30, 2004 Report Share Posted April 30, 2004 Ann, My Jaden has a loose cap too where it does not stay centered, and now I am noticing his eyes are getting swollen from wearing it all the time because it's pushing down and giving him the " wrinkly-dog " effect. I emailed my ortho w/ pics to show him because we live a distance away. He hasn't responded just yet. He also shaved Jaden's cap where the velcro closure is it give it more of a snug fit, but it's still sliding and not staying centered. I am hoping he will grow into it shortly, just like Kim's little Jax did. I know this doesn't help, but I wanted you to know I am going thru something similiar. I also asked the ortho to call me to explain exactly how the cap is supposed to work and where the pressure points should be and so forth. Guest guest Posted April 30, 2004 Report Share Posted April 30, 2004 Ann, I can only speak for the DOCband as that's what we've used, but I'd say that doesn't sound right. IF anything the band should be tighter at the beginning. Many people post about this when first banded, especially w/severe babies b/c the band just teeters back and forth on those pressure points, making it look loose b/c it moves so much. As the head rounds some the band has more contact w/the head and it should start to sit better, thus making it seem less loose. Also, as your baby grows, you would also think it would get tighter, not looser. Was there and adjustment where you think they could have possibly shaved out too much liner? I'm not sure about the foam in a craniocap either, but I wouldn't think it should be soft enough to actually compress. Are you actually told to pull the velcro to tighten it? I'm just curious b/c with the DOCband you just close the velcro however it lies when you put it on. It doesn't rely on the velcro to work at all. I'm not sure how the cranio cap works though, sorry! It does sound like she needs some kind of adjustment though w/the huge red spot. Is it fading w/in an hour? I can't figure out why it's so loose.. how long has she had it now? At first, sure it's loose... until the first couple of fittings. But, if it's been a few weeks it should be a good fit by now. Jaxson grew out of his after 4 months. We did go for adjustments every week right up until the end.. Jax was a growing freak. I hope you talk to your ortho and let us know! Maybe you can get a hold of your ortho and have them take another look at the CranioCap. Good luck and let us know what they say about this. I've never heard that they loosen after awhile. They wouldn't give me a reason. The surgeon said " Some kids are just too misshapen to get a good fit - you can just take it off " . So, we went for the DOC Band in Madison WI - drove 5 hours each way to get there, went through two helmets there that fit PERFECTLY and my daughter now has only very slight asymmetry. We received about a 90% correction with the DOC Band (after being to " too severe for treatment " .) I want to just say that you might want to consult with the DOC folks for more info as your son is already 9 months old and his skull is slowing in growth. At least give them a call. The drive is not that bad, and it is TOTALLY WORTH IT, especially if your son has severe assymetry. I do think that if a baby has flattening on occiput only or on one side in the back that the CranioCap will probably be fine as it just keeps the child's head off the the flat spot. (If the child is young enough and the skull is still growing rapidly). For more serious assymetry, I don't believe (and, in fact, I was TOLD by the Orthotist at Gillette that they don't even treat the asymmtry. Even the Surgeon said that my daughter's assymetries would " grow with her " . Well, you can hardly see them now!!! Yeah DOC Band, Cranial Osteopaths, CranioSacral Therapists, and Pediatric Chinese Massage Specialists!!! Just my OPINIONS and experience, for what they are worth.
