Hi Ruth,

Welcome to the group. I've never heard of NOT wearing a helmet/band

at night. If your baby is in a passive band and isn't wearing his

band at night he could be losing out on precious correction!

I've never heard of any sids risks with wearing a helmet/band at

night. What type of band in your baby in? I'd love to see pictures of

him.

Hi Ruth,

I have also never heard of a helmet or band that has been designed

that is not for nighttime wear - as far as I know, they are all FDA

approved for use for that 22-23 hour a day regimen.

Is sleeping on his flat area at night? If this is the case,

he could very well be compromising the rounding effort that wearing

the helmet during the day accomplishes.

Have you seen good correction with his helmet thus far? What type

of helmet from Sioux Falls is your son in? Did the ortho provide

you with some information or a pamphlet on wear protocol about this

specific type of helmet confirming your son should be wearing it 20+

hours a day? Maybe you could share this information with your

doctor to see if he might change his mind about his recommendation

of not wearing the helmet at night. Is your doctor overseeing the

helmet treatment being provided by your ortho at another facility?

I just want to echo what has said, that if you are in a

passive type of helmet, where you have an adjustment schedule of

about every 4 - 6 weeks, you could be missing out on some

opportunity for further rounding at night by not wearing the

helmet.

When you have time, I would love to hear about your son's situation;

I hope he is getting good rounding!

Take care,

Christie (Mom to Repo'd Remy)

Hi Christie and ,

Thanks for the input - you guys are fast! is in a Starband helmet and his orthotist hasn't given written info about the 22-23 hour wear protocol, but it's nice to hear other people say that is the way to go. He has had nice rounding so far, but yes, sometimes sleeps on the flat spot at night (though we try to keep him off it) and since he didn't get the helmet until 8 1/2 months we don't want to lose any more opportunity than we already have. We waited until he was that age to give repositioning a try. Once we learn how to post pictures, we'll let everyone see our little cutie - we're not biased of course :). Thanks again!

but now I wish we'd done the helmet sooner. Here's our story: I was on bed rest for the last two months of my pregnancy and hospitalized for pre-term labor but thankfully made it to full term (37 and a half weeks) thanks to terbutaline to stop contractions (and many prayers!). 's plagio and tort are due to inutero positioning and favoring his tort side after birth, but we didn't get a diagnosis until he was four months. Since then, we tried repositioning for the plagio, which didn't work, did lots of stretches for the tort, and saw a wonderful chiropractor. His tort is greatly improved, but he is still behind on gross motor from the tort. However, he is making progress - books and Baby Einstein help keep him on his tummy, and he sat by himself yesterday!! We got his helmet at 8 1/2 months cause the ortho said we shouldn't wait any longer. We are thankful the helmet has worked well so far, and glad to hear it's okay to wear at night.

Hi Ruth,

I just wanted to welcome you to the group and echo what everyone

else has told you about the importance of wearing the helmet 23 hrs

a day. I've heard of some babies only wearing the helmets while

sleeping, but never only while awake! While they're sleeping and

flat on their heads is the most important time!
