Thank you for the information. We go to see our family doctor

tomorrow, hopefully he will refer us somewhere, as I will not take

the " it will round out " answer, I feel my daughter is too important

for him to put me on the back burner so to say. I think we may opt

to try the repositioning until her 4 month appt, which is about 6

weeks away. We should see some change by then shouldn't we? What

would you suggest? Should we jump right in and try to get the DOC

band done? I just didn't know much about this until I started

looking around on the net this past weekend. I have no idea at what

age they will band babies. Thanks again for the info.

Hi . I

think if you start repoing your dtr right now, in six weeks you could see a

world of difference. I started repoing my dd at 12 weeks and I am so glad I

decided to do it. I figured she was so young that if I repoed as aggressively

as I could and still didn’t get the results I wanted, then I would still

have time to have banded. And if you check out her pics in the photos/before

and after/repositioned folder you can see she made a lot of progress. What you

might start now is finding out about your insurance and do they cover banding,

what dr’s do they cover, how long would it take to get an appt with a

specialist if you need one. I did that. My repo deadline was 6 months. At

about 4 months, I called the ins, and then called the Craniofacial Clinic at

Children’s Hosp of Pgh and made an appt for one week after her scheduled

6-mo well-baby checkup. Then after her 6 month visit, the dr and I were so

impressed by the way she was rounding from the repo that I just cancelled the

specialist appt. If you are repoing, setting a repo deadline is a good place

to start. Then just “get all your ducks in a row” for any decision

you make at 4 months. BTW, babies generally have a pretty good growth spurt at

3 months so if you are aggressive with your repo starting now, you could be

very pleasantly surprised in the coming weeks. Please let us know how things

are going and what you decide to do. Best wishes!

Hi,

In my opinion, the question of whether to wait to see if repositioning

works or not depends a lot on the severity of the shape issue. The

rule my pediatrician used was this: if she could see a small localized

flat spot at the back of the head she thought repositioning might be a

good bet to fix it, but if she saw an overall deformation of the head

(with forhead bossing, ears out of line, and the paralellagram shape)

she referred for a helmet. If I were you I would try to understand the

severity asap with whatever resources you can access: use the severity

assessment graphs in the links section of this group, contact Cranial

Technology and travel there for a free evaluation, contact a

cranial-facial specialist for an appointment. I think multiple sources

of information will serve the best in case your pediatrician isn't

well informed about plagiocephaly.

I banded my daughter at 4.5 months last year and would definitely do

the same thing again (or try to do it earlier) if I had to face the

decision again. She wore the first band for only 8 weeks and got very

rapid correction. In fact, the doctor and orthotist thought we could

stop there but we opted to continue to a second band to try to take

correction as far as possible. The second band took 16 weeks (due to

slower growth after 6 months of age) and made less correction.

If you do want to wait and see, I would recommend setting up an

appointment with a cranial facial specialist who could prescribe a

band, as well as researching which helmet/band facility you would use

during the next six weeks of repositioning. That way you'll be ready

to go for a band without losing any time if it is needed - rather than

after a long delay after you decide (the specialist appointments can

take weeks to get, and choosing the right orthotist to work with can

be difficult). You can always just cancel the appointments if you

don't need them.

Best Wishes,
