Hi & welcome!

Please chk out our many " repositioning tips " in both our FILES &

LINKS sections of our group. We have many tips, products &

suggestions that may be of help. She's at a great young age to see

correction thru repositioning alone.

I've added SD to your subject line, I'm not at all familiar with

your area, hopefully someone in our group is near you for local

advice.

When will Drs refer you for a helmet? Tough question & it varies

from Dr to Dr! Unfortunately still today, many Drs aren't very pro

banding for unknown reasons & give many parents the " Itll round on

it's own " story, blah blah blah! So hopefully your ped will be

plagio knowledgable & friendly!

Sorry to reply to your post so late, but I recently moved, and am

just now getting caught up on the board posts!

Welcome to the group, and way-to-go on being right on top of the

possible plagiocephaly situation with your daughter -- by alerting

yourself to it while your daughter is still so very young, you still

have all of your treatment options in front of you!

Aggressive repositioning should yield some results quite quickly in

a baby as young as your daughter. If you aren't already, you should

begin to take some weekly progress photos of the top, side, and

front view from the same angle and distance.... this way, you'll

have an objective record of whether or not repo is yielding the

results you'd like to see, or if you need to move on to other

treatment options such as the helmet or band. Torticollis, a

condition where the head and neck range of motion is restricted, can

make repo extremely difficult. Since you said that repo is going

really well, I assume you are not noticing a tilt or your daughter

always looking only in the same direction all the time. How have

you been coming along with nighttime repo? It can be challenging

with really young babies because you need to heed as far as back

sleeping goes for SIDS prevention, but at the same time, keep the

baby's head turned off of the flat area. We have a ton of links to

products and tips for both repo and tummy time in the LINKS/REPO AND

TUMMY TIME folder, as well as some very helpful repo photos from our

own group members in the FILES/REPO HEADQUARTERS folder. We also

have some progress photos of some of our repo babies, including my

own daughter Remy, in the PHOTOS/BEFORE AND AFTER/REPOSITIONED

folder, which you might want to check out when you have time. We

ended up using repo only - we didn't use a helmet or band for our

daughter.

Repo doesn't work in every situation for a number of reasons. If

you find that your daughter's case is one of those, you are right on

the money to be researching banding and helmeting options now,

before you need to make a decision. Pediatricians and specialists

unfortunately show a wide range of varying opinions on severity

assesment and treatment recommendations, so many times that decision

comes down to the parents. I checked into options near your area,

and see that we have many members who have responded with info about

the CranioCap several hours away from you in the twin cities...

Also available in Minneapolis according to the Helmet/Band Database,

is another passive helmet called the PPO helmet. I think we have a

current member that is going to use that helmet. Here is a link to

Another option the might pan out and is quite close to your location

is a Hanger Facility in South Dakota. Hanger is a large Prosthetics

and Orthotics company with hundreds of locations in the U.S. Only a

minority of these locations offer cranial banding, and an even

smaller number have any degree of experience with cranial banding

(this was according to a company rep with whom I spoke.) Hanger may

offer its own, FDA approved, active band called the Hanger Cranial

Band, or may order and offer the Starband as well. If you are

interested, here is the Hanger location nearest you.... maybe they

could let you know if they offer cranial banding, or if another

location not too much farther away does:

Hi, monica,

I dont know where exactly in South Dakota you are. There's a helmet

clinic in children's hospital in Omaha,nebraska. This might be

another option for you. You can probably go to their website and

check it out.
