Hi everyone! My name is Jeannine my son Ian is 6 months old. Since I

can remember my son has had a flat spot on the right side of his

head. I know it is Plagiocephaly as his cosin had it so I am aware of

what it is and everything about it. Since about the time he was 3

months we have been asking out pediatrician what she thinks and she

always says " It will go away on its own " . Well now he is six months

old and it is still there as bad as ever and she refuses to see a

problem. I want to see a specialist but, who do I go see? I can't

go to a specialist without a referal can I? I am so frustrated and

very concerned I want to get this looked at before my son gets any

older. Any advice would be greatly appriciated!

Hello Jeannine,

Welcome to the group! You are right to want to get the ball rolling

now while Ian is young. Referrals depend on your insurance, if you

have a PPO you can usually go straight to a specialist for an appt

but if you have a HMO or POS than yes, you will need a referral. If

you will tell us the area you live then another member might be able

to recommend a doctor for you.

I live in Pittsburgh. We actually get insurance through the state

so, I know that we need a referal to see a specialist. How can I

find a doctor that will refer me though? I am worried that I will

change my pediatrician and they will say the same thing. Thanks for

See if you can " interview " the ped (or nurse) over the phone before

committing to an appointment. Be very up front.

My child has all the signs of positional plagio.

I am not happy with my previous ped's treatment of this condition.

How do you treat this? (if says depends but helmet is an option then

continue)

We have taken the following actions ... over the past ... months with

no improvement.

I have researched options and would like my child seen by a

specialist in treating plagio.

I would like to have my child placed in a molding helmet/band for

correction.

Would you be in favor of this course of treatment?

Then when you do see the doc. Take in CT severity assesment form

(have you seen it and done your own assement?) along with other

supporting documentation. Also, take any pics which document that

the severity has remained constant.

Make sure the specialist is also pro-banding.

Hi Jeannine - welcome!

Our ped (grp of 6 Dr.'s) also said " it will round out " but I talked

to the nicest (female) ped there and pretty much demanded (in a nice

way) that she write a referral to a pediatric neurosurgeon. I wanted

a 2nd opinion and he was the one that wrote the prescription (again,

I demanded it, in a nice way). GOOD LUCK and let us know.

Hi, welcome to CAST! We are in CA and we travel to Salt Lake City Shriners. I only know of one doc who does casting in CA and I don't think he is nearly as experienced as Dr. D'A in SLC. We don't mention doc's names on this group so feel free to email me privately or just Google his full name via the hospital website. He's wonderful and you can mail your info or pehaps email it (?) it to at least get an opinion from him. Do you have X-rays and an MRI you can send?Most casting docs will need an MRI before beginning casting and I must admit I don't know much about Spina Bifida.Angie Livingston is the Care Coordinator at Shriners SLC and she can interface with the doc for you. Hello...not quite sure if Im doing this right...but My 1yr old son has Spina Bifida and Scoli. We are considering casting and I am wondering if anyone else has had success with casting with congenital scoli? It seems Ive only found success with idiopathic. If we decide to try it...I'll need a doctor in California to do it, but Im not opposed to traveling to surrounding states either. HELP! Thank you!
