Guest guest
Well- Hi Everyone. finally got his helmet Starband on Friday and it has taken me today to finally write. It has been very emotional and to tell you the truth my husband and I hate it. 1- We cannot believe how big the helmet is. looks so different. The helmet squishes his cheeks and covers half of his face. We miss his big smiles and feel the helmet stops the big expressions he makes 2- Taking this helmet on and off takes a lot of strength! Boy it is like opening up a clam shell. I pray it will never slip because it could cause some damage. 3- -has been VERY needy- especially today. He just wants to be held ALL the time. I hold him to the point my arms need a break. He doesn't seem to be happy with it at all today. I pooped him out by putting him on his tummy for a while with the help of a boppy. The helmet is very big and clunky. He seemed to hate his tummy more than ever. Before the helmet, he was just learning on pulling himself up and trying to move forward. He really hasn't been on his stomach much at all since Thursday (since the band was on Friday). But, I feel we are back to square one and getting him to stay on his stomach for more than a couple of minutes at a clip. 4- He has not slept with the helmet on over night yet, he has fallin' asleep with it on in the carseat. I just don't feel comfortable with this contraption on while he sleeps. Has anyone had any bad experiences? 5- He is sweating a lot. Especially when we take it off the perspiration is dripping around were his head was covered. Living in FLorida we are trapped in the house or air conditioned places. I am so afraid of him overheating. 6- He goes in for a fitting tomorrow. We find the left cheek is being smooshed in too much and there is too muuch coverage around his right ear. The red spots seem to go away within the hour. he has worn it 4 hours on and 1 hour off yesterday. Today he has just worn it for 2 hours and needed another nap. I think we are both pooped and need a break. Some questions- Does this helmet ever cause neck problems? or any nerve damage around the ears? know to look for the eye muscle problems- but I don't know about the neck and ears. How long does it take to see any change? Is there anyone out there that doesn't do the 23 hour therapy? Maybe more breaks? Isn't there anything better than this? When does it get better!!! Thanks for listening to my venting. A very depressed mom and family, Krissy mother of ph
Guest guest
I just wanted to say sorry the banding hasn't gone smoothly. Jenna's wasn't real hard to get on. It sounds like an adjustment is needed. I agree with Debbie and say please check out other Starband baby's pictures. Jenna's band didnt change her personality, development, playtime or sleep. Please call the ortho and discuss yor concerns. Guest guest
Hi Krissy. My son, Dylan, has been in his Starband for 4 weeks now (he got it at 10 months old). I totally empathize with you on hating it at first. My husband and I both cried the first day. It was so hard to look at. Dylan didn't mind it so much. At first, he hated when we would put it on and take it off - the velcro was so loud at first too. After about a week it was really no big deal to him. It was definitely harder on us. The first couple of weeks will be hard on you but trust me, if I can get used to it, anyone can. I'm a very emotional person and I thought I was never going to get over my " depression " also. After a few helmet adjustments with our orthotist, we finally got the fit right. I don't think any of the helmets fit perfectly at first. Dylan's kept slipping over his eyes and rubbing on one of his ears. At our last appointment (after 3 weeks of the helmet on) we noticed a significant improvement right in the area that we were focusing on. I was so happy! I finally felt like we were doing this for a good reason. It's so hard to get past the negative feelings. Since Dylan was 10 months when he got the helmet, we were nervous that we wouldn't see much progress at first. We're very happy with the amount of correction we've seen even though we've still got about 3 months left. All I can say is that it'll get easier. I'll probably never like the fact that he has to wear it but I know that we have to get through it and that there is no alternative. There are days when I feel like the end will never come and I still get a little down but seeing the improvement will boost your spirits. One more thing. Now that Dylan is cruising the furniture and taking his first steps, It's a great head-protector! When we have the helmet off at bathtime and to clean it, Dylan almost always bumps his head on something. I usually can't wait to get it back on him - if you can believe that! Keep us updated in the weeks and months to come on 's progress, etc. Pretty soon, you'll be giving other parents advice on how to cope with this because you've been there like I was and still am. Guest guest
Beth, As someone who is getting ready to plunge their little one into helmet therapy, thank you so much for your honesty with your experiences. It's been so emotional already and I have yet to take him thru the casting process. At least I know it's ok to be sad about this whole thing. So hard to look at the positives. And, I appreciate knowing that it will be so hard at first, but that over time it will get more and more familiar. Again, thank you for sharing! 3rd day wearing helmet!!!>Date: Tue, 20 Apr 2004 17:41:37 -0000>>Well->>Hi Everyone. finally got his helmet Starband on Friday and it has >taken me today to>finally write.
