Guest guest
Hi Kathy, We started with diarrhea and LATER moved on to constipation. But as for tantrums ... 8 weeks! Horrible tantrums. Guest guest
Kathy, The things that helped my son to have more bowel movements were: SCD (not overnight), juice, especially orange, spinach, Lauricidin Elaine recommends prune juice with orange juice. Some find magnesium helpful. It's good that Abby is eating lots of fruit and veggies. Good Luck, Hope mother of Gibson, SCD since Nov. > Saturday will be six weeks for us on SCD and some days I just want to give it up! I agree with Pearl that it is constant cooking since it seems they need more food. We are going through massive amounts of fruits and veggies. I guess I was hoping for more progress at this point because am still seeing behavior problems although some are definitely better. One of our problems is still battling constipation. She just cannot go much.............maybe twice a week, although the stools look better. Was also wondering if others have problems with their kids lack of appetite when taking flagyl. We are doing that now and she is not eating good at all. Would like to know some opinions on how long it actually takes on SCD to see improvement in constipation and also behavior...............stimming, transitions, tantrums. Thanks, any encouragement is definitely welcome. > Kathy, mom of Abby, SCD since 2-21-04 > >
Guest guest
Hi Kathy! Sometimes I feel the same as you do. I spend a lot of time cooking. But when I look at my boys and I see them playing together it makes me feel good and encourages me to continue. I have faith that it will work. It has worked for many people; why won't it work for you or for me? ... just take a chance. One of my boys has constipation problems. In the begining of the SCD he was doing very well. He had a BM everyday. My mistake was that I introduced a lot of fruits and vegetables, nut flour, and yogurt at the same time. My son started to be constipated again. So, I decided to go back to the introductory diet and he is doing better now. My son started to have BM every 2 or 3 days, but the most important thing is that he is not in pain when he does. I don't give up because I feel that my boys are eating very healthy. And the most important, they quit or reduced some of their behaviors like walking on their toes, doing certaing things with their hands, etc. They are talking a lot more and playing together! I feelt that they are more connected to the world than they used to be. They are not taking flagyl, so I don't know what to tell you about it. They just take calcium and supplements (Kirkman). I don't know if the beets help or not, but I cook for them a lot of pancakes with beets, pears and apples. In the begining they didn't like them, but I continue insisting and now they love them. Today I read a message from a mom giving us a lot of good tips about the way to cook big amounts of food. I will follow her advice. I hope that this message helps you with something. Good luck with your child and take care, (Simon & ) 02-17-04 > Saturday will be six weeks for us on SCD and some days I just want to give it up! Guest guest
" I agree with Pearl that it is constant cooking since it seems they need more food. We are going through massive amounts of fruits and veggies. " To give you some encouragement on this: she's at least eating healthy food. You are slightly more than five weeks into SCD. I remember our first weeks being very confusing, puzzling, every day was different. I had many doubts, but my husband encouraged me to stick with the diet and keep things in perspective. It took so many years to ruin my son's intestines, they are now slowly healing, bit by bit. One very practical hint: after these weeks you may know what your daughter likes. Maybe she likes frittatas/omelettes? Find the time to make 30 (no kidding) of these and freeze them. I'm so glad I have my freezer full of scd food. All of a sudden my son has decided to not eat a single omelette, but two. Fine, we take another one out and steam it. It just takes 5 minutes and he can go on eating. Guest guest
Hi Marjan, I know how healthy this is. We are rather limited but she's eating a lot of fruit sauces, meat with hidden veggies, pancakes, eggs. Mostly before it was fruit, meat, chips, fries, pasta, stuff like that. My husband is very encouraging too.........just wish he would cook! I know it can take a long time to heal. I just get so frustrated when I make many things that she just won't eat or when he behavior is just the same as it was before SCD. I have just done so many things for so many years and I want this to work!! She just has not been eating good the last week but think it's the flagyl making her feel bad. We also started the acidophilus too. She was out of school for two weeks on a break and I thought the teachers would notice a positive change in her when she returned and they didn't............that was a little disappointing but I know it will take more time. Thanks for the tips and the encouragement.
