Guest guest
Hi Kathy, banana is not high in salicylate at all, however salicylate is only one type of phenol, banana is high amine a different type of phenol. Some kids have problem with sals, some with amine and some with both. So we must find a few fruits that is low on both. Pears, mangos, kiwi, avocado, even pineapple are tolerated by my son, who reacts to oranges, apples and bananas terribly. So I think he has trouble with phenols in general and not only the high salicylates. I make a custard, or a sauce with these fruit separately. Freeze in Popsicles containers sometimes to add variety. Or serve as plain custard. He calls it " mango pudding with a splash of pineapple please..... " or pear w/ a splash of kiwi. Or mango Popsicles, pear Popsicle and so on. All fruits are cooked (except avocado), peeled and the ones with seed I pass it thru a sieve(?), to remove seeds..and out of 4 fruits in his mind he is getting 10 different types of snack/ desert. It is kind of repetitive, but as we get further into the diet and I one more item, now it is a new splash to all the old ones and now we have 10 more different items....It has worked so far. Hopefully he does not get wise about it, and loose his interest. Hope this helps. TERESA banana I am wondering why banana is such a problem with these kids with phenol problems if it always lists as low on the charts or even 0.00. ? Is it the sugar in the banana that is a problem? I feel there a lot of foods on SCD and it is doable but with these PST problems that doesn't leave much for some of us mom's to feed our kids? Does anyone else agree? I am frustrated with the choices I have for Abby right now. I know I have a choice of using " no-fenol " but feel I need to get all these other supplement and food issues worked out first. I made her pancakes with 3 eggs, pecan meal, baking soda, salt, and pureed carrot this morning............she hated them!!!!!! Help! Guest guest
Hi, I am still figuring out what bothers Abby. I did not give her banana today or watered down pineapple. She is having a good, calm, cooperative day and has not picked her nails to bleeding yet. Last night I made papaya sauce and she really liked it. She seems to be o.k. with mango, pear, papaya but not sure about pineapple yet or kiwi or avocado. What about pomegranate? I noticed that Knudsen has a " Just Pomegranate " juice. I am going to try to find it. This morning I made her some lemonade with lemon, water and saccharin. Now I am just kind of desperate to find a breakfast pancake that she will eat that has no banana's. Thanks for the ideas! Guest guest
Hi Kathy, I am so glad your daughter's nail biting is subsiding. I wish I had discovered the phenol/SI behaviors earlier, I spent an immense amount of time doing every Sensory integration therapy under the sun trying to stop it. As I told you before, it may be sensory, but certainly it comes out strongly when under the phenol influence. As far as behavior is concerned, nothing helped my son better than the feingold program. It does not address GI healing, but it really helps with the behavior. You had asked earlier about pomegranate. The fruit pomegranate is considered as one of the allowable in stage one of feingold. So, I guess it would be a low salicylate. I do not know about SCD. I used to give the fresh fruit to my son very seldom and he loved it. However it is served fresh and I have not figured out a way of cooking it. I do not know about the juice, I think it would be kind of strong, but I guess you could dilute it well and try it. My son probably would love the juice, because I guess it would be kind of tart. But, it is kind of early for us. If you try it, let me know how your daughter liked it. banana > > > I am wondering why banana is such a problem with these kids with phenol problems if it always lists as low on the charts or even 0.00. ?
