Hi Krissy,

I had to jump in and talk about scanning fom a personal level. My

son was in a STARband for close to six motnhs, and we did use the

STARscanner for his band. I will say that I loved being able to see

the immediate results, esp. being able to see them " in black and

white " and having something concrete to compare his headshape to

(from one scan to the next).

That being said, the STARscanner is not perfect. If a baby moves

while being scanned, the scan will NOT be accurate. It is only as

good as the information that is entered in. The orthotist has to

place the " markers " on the babies face for land marks, and that is

subjective as well. It still boils down to the experience of the

orthotist. If you have an excellent orthotist, then whatever medium

you use, scanning or casting, then the quality of the band/helmet

will be fine. However, if you don't have a good orthotist, the scan

will NOT make the band any better than the traditional casting.

Krissy, I can understand your enthusiasm for the STARscanner vs.

casting, but, in my opinion, it is not the ONLY criteria to use to

decide whom to see for a band. After a full year of reading horror

stories about ill fitting bands, both casted and scanned, I would go

with an experienced orthotist who casts any day of the week, over an

orthotist without training who scans.
