Guest guest
Hi , Welcome to the group! I hope we can help you with Christian's situation. With Christian being so young, you are on the right track to have started repositioning, and especially to have taken progress photos. We have a lot of tips, ideas, and products for repositioning here at the group site in the LINKS/REPO AND TUMMY TIME section, and the FILES/REPO HEADQUARTERS section. When you have time, please browse around and see if you see anything that might help. I was able to successfully repo my daughter Remy, and we did not have to use a helmet/band. If you would like to see her progress photos, you can check them out in the PHOTOS/BEFORE AND AFTER/REPOSITIONED folder. Have you been able to work in some tummy time? Is Christian off of his flat area all the time? Have you had any success with positioning his head off of the flat area at nighttime? You mentioned that he always had preffered his left side -- there is a very common condition called " torticollis, " which the majority of plagio babies have. With tort, the baby head has a tilt/turn, and there is a limited range of motion in the head/neck area. If a baby has tort, it will be exremely difficult to reposition successfully. Usually the tort has to be resolved through PT and stretching exercises before you will see results from repo. Do you know if your ped examined Christian for tort? You also posted that Christian is so flat on the one side, that the other side is noticeably bulging. Many babies with plagio also have accompanying asymmetries such as forehead bossing, ear misalignment, and facial asymmetry (one eye appearing a little larger than the other, etc.) The best way to check for these types of asymmetries is to view the baby from the top of the head down, from the chin view up, and by holding the baby in front of the mirror and looking at the reflection. Do you know if Christian has any of these types of asymmetries in addition to the flatness/bulging at the back of his head? What severity would youy say he is? Remy was a good candidate for repo. She did not have tort or facial/forehead/ear asymmetries, just the flattened area at the back of the head, which I judged to be moderate. She was our only child, and also wasn't in daycare, so we were able to devote 100% of our time and energy to her aggressive repo. It was totally exhausting, a very difficult job, and we kept it up for months. We have several parents here at the group currently repo'ing with good success, and they are a wonderful source of support and ideas! Repo is not for everyone's situation. Progress photos are key, so that you can know right away if repo is not working or has stalled. Ruling out tort is also critical, because if your baby has tort, it may be best to put your energy into PT/stretching, and go ahead and explore your helmeting/banding options. If you end up going down the helmet/band road, you have many, many parents here who can help you every step of the way with your concerns and questions. I have read before that medicaid in another state did cover the band. You should go ahead and start making those coverage calls to see where are as far as that's concerned. The helmet/bands can cost $1000 to over $3000, so there is a wide range of expense there. Many times you can have a payment plan arrangement, but that may vary from helmet brand to brand, and facility to facility. Where are you in Florida? Have you checked out the Helmet/Band Database in the Database section of the group to see what locations and types of bands are available in your area? Would you let me know if I can be of any help? Also, I would love to hear an update on your Fla. medicaid coverage, as well as how your repo progress is coming along when you take an updated photo.
