You are risking passing a phobia to your child. She is certainly picking up

on your feelings and fears already.

You are also reducing, if not eliminating, her exposure to normally occurring

pathogens in our environment. This will weaken her immune system. Frequent

and proper handwashing technique is a more effective and realistic way to

eliminate germs and bacteria from your child's hands after being in any public

place. Which I have no doubt you do already ;-)

BTW-The prepared, cut fruit in your local supermarket has more bacteria than

a toilet seat. Who's cutting the fruit, and where were their hands?????)

I hear you, but you're talking to the OCD. I really have no control

and I just can't go against how I feel. You can't possibly tell me

that you don't think about what the heck is on a public toilet seat. I

get the whole germ thing and exposing yourself to them, but they are

everywhere. We are breathing them in every minute of every day. The

toilet however, is a different thing. Here's how I see it. People have

diahrrea, venereal disease, periods, crabs, and Lord knows what else.

I personally have girlfriends who don't care and sit on the potty and

don't even use toilet paper. I NEVER sit on a public potty, and well,

I sprinkle when I tinkle. I always debate on whether I should wipe it

off or not (I know this is gross, but think about it). I ponder it

because i am deceiving the next person by providing a clean looking

seat, only I have just wiped my urine off it minutes previous -YUCK!

If you are telling me that my daughter needs to accumulate germs from

a public potty to be healthier and build her immune system, then I

think you are crazy. By the way, did you know that Trichomonas is a

sexually transmitted disease that can be passed from a toilet seat or

borrowing a friend's towel to dry off with? NO THANKS! I will spare my

daughter of those kinds of germs thank you very much :.

P.S. I try very hard to be the best mommy I can be. I am also aware of

how my phobia's can affect the kids, so I don't talk about it. If I

feel that I should wash my son's hands off after he has pushed the

children's size grocery cart around Kroger's, I just do it and say

nothing. He still puts his hands in his mouth all the time. It has

been proven that ecoli (from fecal matter) is on just about every cart

in any grocery store. You know those stomach flus you've had in the

past.....????

I don't think avoiding public restrooms constitutes a phobia. I have

seen several reports on studies that were done taking germ cultures from

various places like public phones, etc. The nastiest place was the door

knob/handle in a public restroom......the one going out! I think the

immune system gets plenty of exposure elsewhere. Little ones hands

aren't the only thing that touches places. It is very difficult for

even older children to go to a bathroom without undo exposure. They

can't get on and off the commode without rubbing bodies and clothes all

over it. They can't wash their hands without their clothes swiping up

the counter surfaces.

I agree that cut up fruit may have a germ or two, but it doesn't have

millions like a public restroom. It certainly hasn't had someone's

hinny swiped across it. Just the same, I avoid pre cut fruit and

vegetables that are eaten raw.

Just my humble opinion......

Thanks Debbie for supporting me there. I felt a little attacked in

that post. Yes, I think about the clothes rubbing etc... too. YUCK!!!

I also use a piece of tissue to close the latch because I KNOW that

that is the nastiest place in a bathroom and most others too. Plus, I

use use my foot to flush the toilet. I wonder how many of us (accept

me of course lol) actually wash out knobs in our homes (esspecially

our bathrooms???? Okay, I am digressing a little. I am not going any

further into it because I could talk for hours lol. Thanks you for

your support. I don't feel as nutty as previous :) :) :)
