Hello all,

My son Evan, 13 1/2 mo, has been in a Starband full time for 3 days. I have

been so encouraged and informed by this group since I joined a couple of

weeks ago. I'm glad to be in such good company as I go though this

adventure. Evan has adjusted to the helmet with relative ease and I feel

pretty good about the whole thing.

I have two questions (although I'm sure there will be more). First, how do

you keep the band from getting coated in food? I'm inspired by the mom who

stuffed her child for 3 days (I'm still laughing about that), but already

Evan has smeared food into the padding around the face and ears and into the

velcro strap of his helmet. Yuck. Any suggestions?

Secondly, the first day Evan wore the helmet I took advantage of the hour

on/hour off adjustment time to paint, sticker, and laquer his Starband. Now

that he's sleeping in it, he wakes up in the morning with huge scratches and

chunks of paint missing from being rubbed off on the bars of the crib. How

do you keep the paint on? I didn't use a platic primer before I painted,

would that have made a difference? I'd be happy to learn any other

decorating techinques.

Thank you!

Hi Heidi,

Welcome to the group! I'm glad Evan has adjusted so well to his

STARband! My daughter is 17 mos (today!) and is in her third

helmet. I've never used paint before, just stickers and a few coats

of glossy mod podge. If you check out www.scrapbookbargain.com they

have both brands of the best stickers-- Susy Ratto's brush letters

and Me and My Big Ideas clear backed stickers. They both are clear

backed and looke like painted once you put them on w/some mod

podge. Food wipes off the mod podge very easily. If he gets it on

the foam you can use a really rough wash cloth with 91% rubbing

alcohol. I think it works better than a toothbrush, but you could

try both. I'm not exactly sure what the foam is like in a

STARband. The velcro is probably the toughest area to keep clean

once you have a baby eating messy food! So far the best thing I've

come up with is soaking it in oxy clean. Oxy clean now makes a

spray bottle stain remover as well so you can just spray it on and

they give it a good rinse. Let us know how it goes!

My son has also been in a Hanger helmet for 3 days. He is only 4

months, so his rice cereal is only on his toes and hands, as he is

fong of sucking a toe between bites, LOL. We pretty much started

tasting cereal at the same time as getting the helmet. Maybe we will

be done with banding before he eats anything else! Seriously, I was

thinking a soft toothbrush might get into the velcro and edges that

you describe as having food?

We just decorated with stickers. I got ver nice ones at the craft

store. They are jungle animals and I got a coordinating pack of

borders. I did this so my 4yo dd could help and it is easy to

change. I was just remarking to dh that I think they really look

nice, not like they are " just some stickers slapped on there. " You

can really get high quality ones with plastic backing(our borders

were that kind) and it looks very nice. But they will not last. For

us, that is the fun. Picking a new theme now and again. Easy and

fast to renew! Good luck, mish

Hi Heidi,

two words...shower cap. Not exactly glamourous but it will keep food

off the band.
