SSRI's and thyroid

For years now I have been trying to explain to docs that when I go on

SSRI's (depression caused by hypo so they treat with SSRI's) I get

fatter and have less energy (dramatically so - gain 20 - 30 lbs.

within a few months, lose 20-30 lbs. after going off them).

They said it was impossible to have that result. Yet here I am,

reading so many other stories of patients who gained large amounts of

weight on SSRI's. Some people don't, some people do. The shrinks I

have been to, have no explanation for this.

Found an interesting snippet that might help explain....seems those

of us who are undiagnosed hypo or even diagnosed hypo have real

problems with SSRI's making us more hypo...this snippet was from a

doctor giving advice on a women's health board by the way....

Paxil activates enzymes in the liver that metabolise thyroid hormone,

thus increasing the requirement. In people who are " normal " this

presents no problem. However in, people with a diseased thyroid, it

may produce hypothyroidism, and the same in people who take their

hormone from a bottle. If you stop the Paxil you may not need

hormone, but at this point if you continue the Paxil you need to take

thyroid hormone supplementation.

Hey Gentle! I have been doing research about thyroid disease and

depression. I also wrote an article about tat not too long ago. If you want

to read it, just say so, and I will dig up the article for you.

The SSRI's are ineffective with certain types of depression, and the usuage

of thyroid hormones actually helps relieve the depression without all the

side effects.I am one that has been helped with thyroid hormones, as opposed

to anti-depressants.

Besides depression, thyroid disease has been involved with anxiety,

paranoia, even eating disorders. Also Bi-polar has a strong correlation....

Hi Thyrofeisty! I'd love to read the article!

The thyroid medicine took away my depression 100% - I would say the

SSRI's made my depression slightly better in some ways but much worse

in other ways. So I kept trying one after another hoping for

something better. Wellbutrin helped a bit - but that's not an SSRI.

Hi, ,

Would you share your article on depression with me, too?
