Hello,

I wanted to pose another example to all interested

regarding protection of our scope of practice. I am in

Florida, and I stumbled upon an orthopedic surgeon's

website who is in Texas. To give you a brief rundown

of the practice - it is a single orthopedic surgeon,

Dr. Mark , who uses a team of PERSONAL TRAINERS

in his office to provide physical therapy for his post

surgery patients. I know nothing of his billing

practices but his website used to state " our team of

certified personal trainers are taking physical

therapy to a whole new level. " I'm sure most of you

know that this is illegal to reference physical

therapy without a PT employed. I phoned the APTA and

he was forced to remove " physical therapy " from his

website. He actually phoned me criticizing me for

meddling and told me that his trainers were certified

ATHLETIC TRAINERS. I referenced each employees names

with NATA and BOC and not surprisingly none were

listed in the certification archive as ATC's. If you

look at his website www.sandersclinic.net you'll

notice his website now says " certified trainers. " Like

I stated before, I know nothing of how he bills but it

is appalling that personal trainers are performing our

job. I just wanted to point out that APTA will take

action if you notice other professions treading on our

practice. An easy personal example for you the PT to

find is right in your local phone book. Open up your

Yellow pages or business section of the phone book.

Any group that lists themselves under the " Physical

Therapy " or " Physical Therapists " section that does

not employ a PT is fraudulently through

misrepresentation. There are 5 chiropractors and 4

massage therapy clinics in my local yellow pages

listed under " physical therapists. " Be proactive.
