Guest guest
Help! My son (21 months) began the SCD about 3 months ago. I confess, we skipped the intro stage because I was afraid he would starve. We had just finished a round of antifungal medication (Ketoconozole) so we felt we were starting with a clean slate. Initially, we were encouraged because for the first time we were seeing normal color and consistency stools. We never got to the stage of getting these results on a regular basis. We would usually progress from nicely formed, good color stools to soft, then sloppy then back to trophies. Then at around 2 months into the diet, we couldn't get the trophies back at all and an OAT test revealed that the yeast was back much worse than before. We've just finished another round of Ketoconozole and started Nystatin plus we rotate four natural anti-fungals like GSE, biociden, Aquaflora. At this point my son is having the worst stools of his life and I feel so discouraged. The last couple days he has produced huge quantities of stool (over 1 lb each). His stools have become like bread dough and foul smelling and his stomach is very distended. I'm always wondering if what we're experiencing is die-off or re- colonization. Is it possible to re-colonize yeast while on a drug like Ketoconozole? My son has little red pimple like bumps that have been around for many months (some of them 6 months)..sometimes they're visible other time not. When we treat for yeast with drugs, they flare up or become itchy and crusty. Bumps that had become completely invisible become red again and new bumps appear. We've taken him to dermatologists and allergists and there seems to be no explanation. Even our DAN doctor has never seen this. It seems directly related to yeast but I just can't figure it out. Again, I wonder if when we see them flare up, does it mean die-off or re-colonization. Here are my confessions: We're still using Kirkman's Spectrum Complete because I can't find a legal alternative that has the combination of supplements we need. We're also using Culturelle and Jarro probiotics...both of which contain inulin (I know...illegal but recommended by our DAN doc) We're using organic baby food but I called the company and spoke to the owner who assured me that there were know other ingredients...we spoke at length. We've been using Applegate farms hot dogs (I know, I know...not legal but my son will eat them when he won't eat plain chicken. We have been using dried fruits and dried peas (I didn't know these were a problem). I know we've made some mistakes along the way and I'd like to go back to the intro diet and start fresh. Is there a legal chicken stock for the intro diet or do we have to make this from scratch? Just an added note, though my son's still had terrible bowel problems, he has had tremedous developmental gains. We have seen improvements each of the three times we treated the yeast with drugs Unfortunatley, the yeast keeps coming back worse than before and the diet hasn't helped in that regard though I acknowledge we haven't been entirely legal. a
Guest guest
a, The only part I can help you with is to ask more questions about the bumps he has. My son had a mysterious rash on his neck that came around August. When I finally got him to our now retired DAN! dr, he said it looked to him like a yeast rash. I may have this in a photo that I can send you if you want to compare. The rash was red bumps, then it turned into having white tops. Nothing would make them go away. I actually tried scrapping a few from time to time and they always had a seed and then bleed horribly. The scabs wouldn't heal easily either, so obviously I ditched that idea. The rash began to clear when I rid him of the ProEPA and Rice cereal he had been eating. I thought it was because they had a hidden soy source in the vitamin E and he'd been broken out from that all this time. It's mostly gone, but he has a few lingering places. I noted that since starting this diet the few places left are more irritated looking. Anyway, if you want to compare and figure this out together I'll send you a photo. Lynn Austin 4 yrs LCA and ASD, SCD for one week. Previously GFCF for 1 1/2 yrs. Non-veral but recent improvements that are amazing, prior to SCD. Guest guest
I don't know if this will help but my friend's son had those same bumps. She went to the DAN doctor and he said yeast. She went on all this medication and it di not help, so she went to the dermotoligist and got on different meds. Finally she took out potatoes and they went away. They were bad too. My sonhas this also(but smaller red bumps on the face) when he eats winter squash and a lot of eggs. You might want to look at the foods he is eating. Guest guest
I know this is probably not what you want to hear but I have steered clear of prescription drugs to reduce yeast because of precisely your problem. Resistant yeast surviving through treatment and then recolonizing a stronger strain of yeast. We have had little bumps on the face and backs of arms for years. The face bumps have reduced through diet but the back of arm bumps persisted until recently when I started giving epsom salt baths daily. 1 cup epsom salts per 60lbs of child (i.e. if your child is 30lbs. use 1/2 cup) dissolved in bath water as warm as is tolerable. I include one cup of apple cider vinegar in the bath and use more than the recommended 1 cup of salts (my son is about 60lbs.) My ped insists that the bumps are a form of excema but I am sure they are yeast related. Since they don't really know what causes excema I think it is a catch all condition. Perhaps you can try doing the into diet starting with winter or spring break and then continueing on. The nut free thing stinks. Hang in there and try to tighten up on the illegals. You can use custom probiotics. Have you looked into the SCD B complex with C & zinc from Freeda. Lucy's Kitchen has it. Are there any legal hot dogs out there? Good to know you are having developmental gains even with the illegals. Think how well he will do when you can become completely legal.
