Canned cashews? Were these raw cashews? Or roasted? I've never used

cashews..... or any other nuts..... from a can on SCD. I'd be suspicious that

there could be illegals. I have gotten some bad batches of cashews, though....

that had a strong, bitter aftertaste..... not sure what it was but I threw them

out. Fresh raw cashews should actually taste slightly sweet.

cashew bread - funny taste?

Weird question here - have you ever had your bread come out with a funny

taste, and you didn't change anything? My cashew bread has a funny aftertaste

and it never has before. Almost fishy, but not overpowering. The eggs weren't

bad, the yogurt was new, and the cashews had just come out of the can, opened it

up and ground them! I'm befuddled. Luke's not ready for the nut flour bread

yet but I sort of depend on it! ;)

The can is in the trash, but I have to admit, this is starting to GET ON MY

NERVES!!!!!!!! Not you all, just the whole THING of thinking something is okay

and it's not. She said mixed sold in mixtures were not allowed. This is just a

can of cashews, what I've been using to grind up for flour because they are low

in salicylates and have a good flavor. I use the butter from them, too, grind

them down. Like I said the can is in the trash. So do I have to go buy cashews

in bulk at the health store way across town? If so, fine, but I'm royally

perturbed that I've been making all this stuff WRONG. (forgive me if I'm short

but I'm starting to feel like Cinderella, will I ever get to the point that I'm

not up every night cooking something? I'm tired. It's worth it 100 times over

for Luke but I'm just starting to get tired and I'm also sick of making

mistakes)

Hi ,

I looked back in BTVC..... and you're right, it IS confusing. I see that it does

say " unroasted cashews " (meaning raw). I have just never heard of raw cashews

that come in cans. Basically any roasted nut is going to have a starch coating,

along with some oil probably..... and I would just be leary of any that come

canned as they are probably not raw. I can understand how hard it is when you

try to go exactly by the book..... and it definitely does say " Nuts sold in

salted mixtures are not permissable since most have been roasted with a starch

coating " ...... which would lead you to believe that only those in " mixtures "

have this starch. But, truly...... ANY roasted nut could have added starches.

I think it was something I learned by being on the list when Elaine was

participating on the list with us...... she basically says " No roasted nuts " ....

unless you roast them yourself in the oven with a little olive oil. Anyway, note

that the book does say " UNroasted cashews " .... so whether they are in a can or

in bulk, they need to be raw..... and I've never seen raw cashews in a can. I

know how frustrating it is to have to go across town to a natural foods

store....... I have to drive 30 miles to get to my nearest one (Wild Oats) and

they often don't have what I need so I have to drive another 20 miles to get to

Whole Foods. I try to stock up once a week but I always forget something. Makes

me want to move closer in.

Anyway, there is a LOT to be learned from the other parents on the list that

clarifies the book....... and really the best source of info is Elaine's

website, where she can update information as needed. Don't worry..... everyone

here has made lots of mistakes in interpreting the book. I had the advantage of

having been on the list for a couple of months before I ever introduced nuts in

any form to my daughter. Try to look at it this way..... finding out you need to

change something means one more step that could make a big positive difference

for your child.
