Guest guest
Lara, Constipation is just another manifestation of an intestinal tract that is not working properly.....the other end of that GI spectrum. Many of the kids here started out constipated. The book talks alot about diarrhea..... but remember, it was not written for the autism community, it was directed as more specific gut disorders where diarrhea is more common. Dried fruit is not used in the beginning of the diet...... it would be introduced after some months of healing. Each child is different but it's definitely not something that you'd start out with. Cranberries especially..... because of the seeds and skins, unless you could cook and strain them to remove all that.... and then maybe make fruit leather out of the sauce (without sugar, might tart, though!). All fruit is peeled, seeded and cooked in the beginning stages. Have you seen the stages chart on the website? www.pecanbread.com under " Food Preparation " . Patti, mom to Katera, SCD 9 months ----- Original Message ----- I am just starting the diet and was wondering if dried cranberries, apricots and mangos are ok? I know I have to make sure that nothing has been added. I do know that they have higher sugar levels. Also, reading about other children and the SCD in general everything always mentions loose stools, but my son has the opposite he is always constipated and has very light grey stools that have food particles in them. Does anyone know whether this is another issue or will SCD be as benefitual. Thanks, Lara Mom to Quin 3yrs - ASD (GF/CF/Corn & soy free, starting SCD)
Guest guest
Patti, Thanks for your reply. I am typing this as my 3 year screams and hits me. He is looking all over for his cereal. My son literally does not eat anything except dried cranberries and Rice Twice cereal, he will pick out the sugary bits of the cereal and throw the rest on the floor. He has limited himself to only dry cereal since 15 months after a dose of apo-sulfatrim...he stopped eating the 1st day I gave it to him. I have tried everything. Can all these things living in my sons body literally control his mind? I really feel like he is functioning as the host to little monsters and he is fading away. I have seen the stages, he has had chicken soup, turkey, carrots and eggs laid out today in turns. Nothing, just walks around crying and screaming, trying to hand me the bowl. I tried this in the past lasted for 4 days, he ate nothing, just lay on the bed. Scary. Guest guest
Lara, I can't say I've been through what you're going through right now..... but my heart goes out to you. I know there are other parents here who have indeed been in your shoes and hope they will chime in and offer you some encouragement. When you asked: <<Can all these things living in my sons body literally control his mind?>> The answer is YES.....!! Unfortunately, that's exactly what goes on. Isn't it terrible?? At least, you can rest assured that this behavior you're seeing is not really Quin...... it's the gut bugs, fighting for their own survival. And they don't give a rip about your child's health or happiness. I hope some of the other parents can give you some ideas for making it through this rough transition. One option might be to just give him any legal SCD food that he might accept for now...... allow ZERO illegals..... then go back and do the intro diet later. Sue (from Pickering) did that with . She can probably really relate to what's happening with you and Quin right now. Naturally, he isn't going to be able to have his rice cereal, or the sugary cranberries (did you get them out of the house entirely?) ...... and it could be that there is just not going to be any substitute that he is going to be happy with. I'm just hoping we can help you through this and figure out some options. Did you read through the section of the website on picky eaters? It's in the " overcoming difficulties " section. Hang in there...... we're here for you. You must be exhausted.
