Guest guest
Hi Laurie, Yup, it is easy to refill and stuff. I just got my new insulin pens. Unfortunately, my endrocronologist did not respond to there fax request for a refill so I had to call and have them send me it and then I had to mail it in. I am ready to ditch them. The diabetic clinic at one of the hospitals closed and since then they have not responded to my request for a new appointment. At the may 28 appt the receptionist said she would mail it to me. Nothing yet and the phone is always busy. I am going to make an appointment with my gp to discuss ditching them. Anyway, for me at Walgreens I need to pay only $9 for a month supply of any of my drugs. It is $9 for a 3 month supply thru my insurance plan thru Medco Health. Basically, I am paying $6 a month more to go to Walgreens. It is about 2 blocks from where I work but I guess it is still money so I need to get that gp appointment. I still would drop off my sharps container there though--they provide and dispose of them free. Thanks for all the info though--Tricare still does not cover " vitamins " such as CoQ10.. oh well Re: Carnitor > > > > > >> Just to add a side note on availability. Guest guest
Oh--I have to pay only the copay amount at Walgreens because they are in the " network " I did not know that last February and Tricare would not reimburse $32 for the insulin pens when I first got them. I finally got my money and am in the Walgreens computers now all over the country as having to pay only the copay amount. Re: Carnitor > > > > > >> Just to add a side note on availability. Guest guest
Laurie, Thanks. That is some sort of a relief to know that not everyone has the odor problem. I was starting to think my already non-existant social life was going to get worse. ) He wants me to take 660 mg twice a day. How much are you taking? Has it helped you? Guest guest
Laurie, I just picked up my first prescription of Carnitor. Dr. Korson wants me to take 660mg twice a day. The prescription after my insurace paid a whopping $14.35, cost me $75.50 out of my pocket. Does this sound correct? I cannot even imagine adding the cost of CoQ10 to that. I do not have the time, energy or the money for this disease!!! Sheila
Guest guest
I had problems when I only took the Carnitor. After adding the CoQ10, I have had no problems with the odor since they work together. Guest guest
Sheila I take 990 mg three times a day. It has helped in conjunction with the other supplements. I really feel like I am holding my own for now and that is a good feeling. Laurie Laurie, Thanks. That is some sort of a relief to know that not everyone has the odor problem. Guest guest
Ok. I think I just got a little bit better news. I called the pharmacy, and then my insurance company. I have a $75.00 deductible (which I obviously have now reached), and for the rest of the year the Carnitor will only cost me $3.07 per perscription. Now that sounds much better! Now if I could only get the insurance to cover the CoQ10. Dr. Korson said that we can battle the insurance company over the CoQ10, but he wants to wait to see if I actually need it and if it works for me first. Guest guest
Shelia, My insurance is billed about $160.00 a month for my carnitor and my co-pay is $20.00. No, this disease is NOT cheap!!! Guest guest
Ann-Marie The Carnitor tablets are larger than aspirin and they can get stuck sideways at times. Of course it could be because I take 3 of them and 4 CoQ at the same time. My mother takes the liquid and has never complained about the taste. It isn't as convenient as the tablets if not at home. laurie Reply-To: Date: Tue, 2 Jul 2002 22:20:57 -0400 To: " @... " < > Subject: Carnitor Hi Guys, For those of you who take " Carnitor " do you take the tablets or the liquid? What does the liquid taste like? And how " BIG " are the tablets(pills)? I heard they are HUGE. I gag on pills of any size. I have my Pharmacy ordering it for me tomorrow, but am wondering if I should have them order the liquid instead of the tablet form of it. Guest guest
I am new to taking Carnitor. From my brief experience, the pills are not fun. They are kind of large, and they disolve quickly. I have gagged many times taking them. If you have trouble taking pills, you might want to let your doctor know. Just my 2 cents Sheila )
Guest guest
My two boys take it in pill form. It is easily snapped in half with your fingers HOWEVER, you have to take it right away as it will disintergrate quickly. Don't know anything about how the liquid tastes. The pills have a fishy odor....but it doesn't bug the boys. Carol
Guest guest
Hi Shelia, Thanks for your experience taking the Carnitor. I gag quite easily so I decided to go with the liquid. And I didn't know that they disolve quickly. Thanks for telling me. I don't want to taste them going all the way down my throat. UCK!! I know you stated that you are new to taking the Carnitor but can you tell me your experiences with it and have you seen any difference on it? good or bad?? Guest guest
Carol, I used to get a fish type body odor from the Carnitor until I also started taking CoQ10 also. They work together synergistically. > Carol DuPont wrote: > > Hey Ann-Marie: > > I think the liquid form is flavored...what flavor, I don't know. > > I have heard that if you are taking too much Carnitor for your body to handle you can have a side effect of diarreha and you can actually get a fishy smell to your body. I have heard that if you are taking too much Carnitor for your body to handle you can have a side effect of diarreha and you can actually get a fishy smell to your body. I have only heard of these side effects with kids. Fortunately, my kids have had neither problem. Neal, my youngest, says the pills smell like a Bass! Guest guest
Hi I have a question....Are L-Carnitine, and Carnitor the same drug ?? I take L_Carnitine (or Was)...but I can't swallow them anymore They are sooo big. I can't put them with my other pills in my daily pill box, because they kind of dissolve, and they smell like fish. I'm suppose to be on 4000 mg/day and now that I can't swallow them , I wonder if anyone else has any ideas ?? I know I'm getting weakness in my throat, because when I feel tired it's hard to swallow alot of things. Any ideas ??? Thanks, robin
Guest guest
Anne-Marie, The liquid form has a cherry taste to it, and isn't too bad. I put it in a glass of juice and drank it that way when I was taking the liquid form and it worked quite well. Good luck Nikki > > Carol DuPont wrote: > > > > Hey Ann-Marie: > > > > I think the liquid form is flavored...what flavor, I don't know. Guest guest
Sorry, I hit send before I was done typing (oops). I meant to say the taste worked quite well when I mixed it in my juice. I had switched to liquid because of the GI side effects from the pills. When I switched to the liquid, my body didn't process it correctly and I got worse pretty quickly. I then had to switch back to the pills and I just deal with the side effects. The pills do have a fishy odor, and I can taste a fishy taste to them. If you pop em in your mouth pretty quickly and then swallow its not TOO bad. I always pop a mint in my mouth afterwards to counteract the taste. If you can't stand the taste of them, I do have some ways to make it better. Let me know if you want the " Recipes " hehe Nikki > Anne-Marie, > > The liquid form has a cherry taste to it, and isn't too bad. Guest guest
When Nikki first started taking the pill form of carnitor, she had no problem swallowing the horse sized pills. It was the taste that made her want to say no way. I have done lots of things to disguise the taste, from crushing them into a spoonful of ice cream, applesauce, pudding etc to melting a few chocolate chips and putting the crushed carnitor in that. To make them into chocolate candy wafers, I would place some chocolate chips in a glass dish, melt them in the microwave. Then I would take a teaspoon of the melted chocolate, put that into a tiny little plastic cup/dish. Crush the carnitor pill, add it into the melted chocolate, stir well, add crushed peanuts, tiny marshmallows, etc. Repeat this for each dose making up a whole days worth of doses at a time. Place all the tiny cups into the fridge till its time to give that dose. Wahla! Lifesaving chocolate! lol. Most days now though Nik just pops em in her mouth, swallows fast and then sucks on peppermint. Come to think of it, maybe Nik is just looking for ways to get candy. hmmmmmm hehehe Juli (Nikki's mom) > Hi Shelia, > > Thanks for your experience taking the Carnitor. Guest guest
, Thank you for the info. Does that mean I could get a prescription for Carnitor? Thanks, Robin
Guest guest
Yes and no. Carnitor is the Rx pure form of L-Carnitine where the stuff in the health food stores, etc. is different strengths from bottle to bottle and has many fillers that aren't good for people. Guest guest
Hi Carol, The liquid form is gross. My sibs and my mother have no trouble taking it; however, it makes me gag. It has a very oily texture to me, and I get a really upset stomach not too long after ingesting it. I'm on 1200mg a day. Because the HMO (gotta love em'!)will only pay for 12oz a month, I have to purchase three big bottles of L- carnatine from a health food store. When I buy it from the health food store I buy a vanilla flavor, and it is silghtly more tolerable. :-) D. (21 yo Mito) > My two boys take it in pill form.
