Guest guest
, to go up to 2.5 in one foul swoop is a lot for your body to get used to. I have found that over a period of time it usually becomes easier to eat certain things. For a lot of people, being able to eat or even drink first thing in the morning is an absolute no-no. I find I cannot eat before 11.00 am on most days, but am able to have a cup of tea 8 out of 10 mornings. You just need to take it very easy for a while. It will be a little of trial and error as you will have to try things out to find out if you can tolerate them. The funny thing is though, one day you wont be able tolerate something and the next day you will. You really have to take one day at a time. If at any stage you cannot keep fluids down I would suggest you have some fluid out as it is very easy to dehydrate, especially with the hot summer we are having. Why don't you start off with liquids and progress to food over a few days it might help you adjust to the fluid in the band. Take care and if even in doubt, call your doctor, he will know what is best for you. Esther
Guest guest
Hi , 2.5 is a HUGE fill for the first one! The usual over here is 2.0, I believe. Having just had my second band put in, my first fill a month ago was only 1.5, and last Friday I was upped to 2.0. I had exactly the same thing happen as you did.... I couldn't even keep a sip of water down. Unluckily for me, though, I had a heap of trouble finding someone to help (weekend!) and had to suffer till Sunday afternoon, till eventually I paged Skinner and he came in and emptied my band. Ghastly, no food or drink for almost three days, throwing up and reflux..... aaarrgghh, don't want to go through that again in a hurry! On Tuesday I went back to see Dixon and he put in 1.7 (the original 1.5 wasn't enough for me) and I am very restricted, but at least able to keep a bit down. I'm going to be watching my intake closely and will be back in to get more fluid out if I continue to have reflux, and I would strongly suggest you do likewise. It can be really dangerous not to keep hydrated in this weather. Take care, and hope things settle down for you. On the bright side though..... isn't it great to know that this thing really does work! *Smile* . Guest guest
**Esther Thanks for your advice......I've just had a cup of coffee and that has stayed down fine so I will just take it easy and just stick to fluids over the next couple of days......not drink first thing when I hop out of bed and hopefully things will settle down. Guest guest
Geri, I have just found this group today and am looking forward to participating in various discussions. Like you I have just had my 2nd band fitted and I am definitely not looking forward to having it filled having had complications (a hernia through the diaphragm resulting in a 2nd visit to theatre and inflammation of the stomach that let nothing through the band) and having spent 15 days (in 3 admissions) in hospital all up instead of the 3 to 4 that I had been expecting. Having had the initial op (2nd band) on the 8-Jan I am still on the 1st week of transition to solids (mashed potato stage). I am anticipating that the Prof will do the fill sometime mid March and I hope he doesn't put any more than 2.0ml in. , despite the problem persist with the band as the results will really be wonderful. Guest guest
Everybody is different,at the moment I not sure whats happening with my fill due to a slippage and 1 operation in Oct last year (I was banded Mar 97) then a 2nd operation (Nov) to fix the band that I had dislodged in hospital due to vomitting Violently as I wasn't given any maxalon with my morphin I'm now on my 3rd fill and up to 3.5mls and not really any restriction as of yet but I've been really careful and its only been 3 days. Dr thinks I must have a thin stomach lining, lucky me so it can all depend on the thickness of your internal bits so as I said we are all different But at least you now it's working for you probably to well. I'll keep waiting to see what happens. I'm going on holiday next week and don't want any problems with things while I'm away. I see Dr again 22 March she said if I still have no restriction I'll have to have another barium swallow so will have to wait and see. All the best Vicky (with a Y) Brisbane

Guest guest
Hi Ken, You have certainly done well, haven't you?? Well done, now we need some photos of you, before and after!! What state do you live in?? I'm in SA. I'm booked to get a fill on the 16th of feb, but while I didn't have a lot of trouble until near the time of replacing the band, it's going to be a shock to the system to have a fill, I just know it, but I will start with only 1 ml, then up by .5 at a time, nothing more!! My stomach only tolerated 2.5 mls maximum last band, so I don't want to overdo it.....Look forward to hearing from you again Geri RE: God!!.....What a shock to the system!! > Geri, > > I have just found this group today and am looking forward to participating > in various discussions. > > Like you I have just had my 2nd band fitted and I am definitely not looking > forward to having it filled having had complications (a hernia through the > diaphragm resulting in a 2nd visit to theatre and inflammation of the > stomach that let nothing through the band) and having spent 15 days (in 3 > admissions) in hospital all up instead of the 3 to 4 that I had been > expecting. > > Having had the initial op (2nd band) on the 8-Jan I am still on the 1st week > of transition to solids (mashed potato stage). > > I am anticipating that the Prof will do the fill sometime mid March and I > hope he doesn't put any more than 2.0ml in. > > , despite the problem persist with the band as the results will really > be wonderful. > > Regards, > > Ken > > Height: 178cm > Originally banded: 28/7/97 > Weight then: 188kg > Re-banded 8/1/01 > Weight then: 118kg > Weight now: 103kg

LOL Well, if I were you, I would just try and persevere just for today, and just try fluid just until you get used to the fill.....it does take a while to work out what is going on. If by the end of work you still can't keep much down, or anything at all, then maybe give a ring :0) I know when I've had a fill in the past, it would be a couple of days settling in to know what's what. Guest guest
A sad (but kinda funny) postscript...... My sister took me out for lunch today (belatedly) for my birthday. I told her I'd only be able to have soup.... ordered a bowl.... ate about three spoons of it over the space of half an hour... then politely got up, went to the bathroom and deposited the lot. Better luck next year, I hope! Still laughing, .
Guest guest
Another voice in welcome, Ken. The other beat me to it to tell you about the support group meetings. Please feel welcome to join us... the more the merrier. Those of us who have found our way there have definitely found it helpful to be able to share highs and lows with the only other people who can really understand. I'm also on my second band, as of December 2000. Whoever said it behaves differently from the first is right.... I'm having some trouble getting a handle on this. Will get there though. Again, welcome. All the best, . Guest guest
I do understand, but I forced myself to have some taken a week before I had the surgery, and I'm glad I did as I don't remember being the size I was!!! Guest guest
Hi , Can you tell me what is different about the 2nd band?? I have the 2nd band, but haven't had a fill yet, so maybe you could give me some of your experiences :0) Try and get myself ready before I have the fill. Guest guest
*LOL* I just had the same experience with my custard!! I've just rang the Doc and I'm going in tommorrow and getting another .5ml taken out, I think it's just a bit too much of a shock for my poor old body.......I think I need to take my fills a little slower. Guest guest
> Can you tell me what is different about the 2nd band?? Well, the first difference, for me at least, was that before the first fill I had absolutely no restriction, and a ravenous appetite. Not only didn't I lose any weight.... I actually gained some. With the first band I lost 14 kg in the first two months with an unfilled band, had some restriction and very little appetite. The second difference seems to be that I need much less fluid in the band to feel strong restriction.... which I guess is a good thing. Having to get used to the sensation all over again, because I haven't had it for so long (band slippage etc). Good luck with yours. I'm taking heart from Gail who has done brilliantly with her second band, and hoping that my very inauspicious beginning will soon be a memory and I'll be back on the road to success. All the best, . Guest guest
Well...the scales have finally moved down another kilo as of this morning!! No wonder...... I can't keep much down.....I'm going back to Dr this morning and I think I'll ask him to reduce it to 1ml and then increase in .5ml increments as I can handle it. I must be a bit pathetic, but I can't cope with chucking up every time I eat something (even custards etc), even though the weight loss would be excellent..........I've been overweight for so long, it's not going to kill me taking it off SLOOOWLY.....although it jacks me off when the scales don't budge for a few weeks....lol......just no pleasing some people..... ) Banded: 21/12/00 by Dr Height: 5' 7 " Weight Then: 112kg - BMI: 38.8 First Fill: 2ml - 08/02/01 Weight Now: 105kg - BMI: 36.3 Total Weight Lost: 7kg My Goal: Anything under 70kg " Endre Iberer " on 08/02/2001 10:14:19 Please respond to ozband To: ozband cc: (bcc: Bosman/Rainsfords/Britax) Subject: Re: God!!.....What a shock to the system!! Guest guest
Hi Ken, Welcome to the ozband bunch. You have done so well with your weight loss. Congratulations. Sorry to hear about your problems and time in hospital. We have the same surgeon and I had my band replaced with a new one on July 31st last year. This second one is working better than the first. It's good that your thinking you don't want more than 2 mls for your first fill. My fills second time round were: 25-8-00 First fill after op Prof gave me 1.5 (I have 2 mls for my first band first fill) 8-9-00 2.5 mls, 15-9-00 2.8 mls , 13-10-00 3.1 mls, 3-11-00 3.3 mls. I have stayed at 3.3 and at 3 monthly visits. The restriction seems to be stronger second time round. With my first band I had to go up to 4.2 mls to get the same restriction I have now. Everyone is different though. Good luck with it all. RE: God!!.....What a shock to the system!! Geri,I have just found this group today and am looking forward to participatingin various discussions.Like you I have just had my 2nd band fitted and I am definitely not lookingforward to having it filled having had complications (a hernia through thediaphragm resulting in a 2nd visit to theatre and inflammation of thestomach that let nothing through the band) and having spent 15 days (in 3admissions) in hospital all up instead of the 3 to 4 that I had beenexpecting.Having had the initial op (2nd band) on the 8-Jan I am still on the 1st weekof transition to solids (mashed potato stage).I am anticipating that the Prof will do the fill sometime mid March and Ihope he doesn't put any more than 2.0ml in., despite the problem persist with the band as the results will reallybe wonderful.Regards,KenHeight: 178cmOriginally banded: 28/7/97Weight then: 188kgRe-banded 8/1/01Weight then: 118kgWeight now: 103kg
Guest guest
Hi , It jacks us all off when the scales don't budge....and you definatetly are not pathetic. (promise me you won't say that again) Glad to hear you were down a kilo. But please be careful. I'm glad you are asking for a reduction to 1 ml You are right you should not have to cope with chucking up especially custards. This tells me you have too much fluid in the band or something's not right. If you lose weight fast your losing fluids instead of fat. When you start to be able to keep small quantities down the weight loss may plateau for a few weeks. This happened to me. I lost about 3 kg in a week due to a tight band and chucking then had some removed and put on 3kgs in a week. It then took 3 weeks before I started to lose again. Sounds like you might need fills at very small increments. Good luch and let us know how you go. Can at least eat small amounts and keep it down..........and I've lost another kilo since then!! I'm soooo wrapped.........104kg now, I've just passed my first goal of 105kg.........next 100kg........can't wait to get into those double digits!!
