Guest guest
Hi Nan: It's been my experience that anything that is helpful to us is usually pricey, at least to start. LOL! I agree that a talking magnification device would be absolutely awesome for reading labels, etc. Becky and Cassidy, Pilot Dog, Poodle maddpoodle27@... Guest guest
I may be a minority of one, but ... I am not convinced that any label-reading device, be it a talking gizmo or a magnifier, would be very practical reading packages in a store. There's too much stuff on the shelves and even in a store whose layout is familiar, too many displays are changed to make it practical to do much reading with a device, especially if someone with a bazillion little ones is trying to get by one. (grin) Best to use the old tried-and-true technique of using a reader or store helper even if some of them aren't as educated as one might like! <g> Mike Good evening >>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>> Hi Everyone: >>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>> I just wanted to pop in and say hello to you all. Guest guest
Hi Mike: While I agree with you on this one I think the label reading gismo would come in handy when at home and you are looking for a can or box of food. Guest guest
I have a bar code reader at home. It is about the size of the Accu-check Voice Mate, although heavier. It is made to be carried into stores etc as it comes with a strap. I use it all the time at home for identifying the bar codes on can; packages etc, but find it is too slow to do in a store. You have to pick up the package or can and put in front of the window so the machine can see the bar code and as there may be 100 cans of the same shape (such as in the isle where soup cans are stacked), you could go through many, many cans before finding the one you want. Guest guest
There actually are small, hand-held CCTVs which can be used to magnify anything placed under the camera, such as food labels or mail. They're about the size of a Braille 'n Speak, for those of you familiar with that technology. I'm hoping to get funding for one this year, because it would help me with teaching, but I'm also looking very forward to being able to calculate carbs using food labels without having to seek sighted assistance. I'm not sure I would use it shopping, though, it might end up being faster just to go with a sighted person or get help from a store employee.
