Guest guest
I will be doing an inservice on minimally-invasive total knee replacements and I was wondering if anyone is familiar with this procedure. I would also like to know if anyone has worked with patients who have had this procedure done and how they have responded. Thank you for any and all information concerning this topic. Guest guest
I worked with Bonutti, an orthopedic surgeon in Illinois. He was one of the pioneers of the procedure and travels around teaching other docs the technique. Molly Byers, DPT works with him now and can probably help you out. You can find the contact information, and some limited information on the procedure, at the website: www.bonutticlinic.com. It's an amazing procedure to watch if you get a chance. Guest guest
While observing a standard open joint replacement with a local orthopedic surgeon the anesthesiologist or another assistant stated that another orthopedist (using the minimally invasive technique) in the same hospital had breached (ground through) the cortex of either a femur or tibia. The surgeon's comment was that if a surgeon is going to use the minimally invasive (fluoroscopy assisted) technique he'd better USE the fluoroscope. " Minimally invasive " seems like a great idea to me but I wouldn't want to be among a doctor's first few subjects or to have one that thought he could work by braille. Lance P. Guest guest
Vbarnes0010 I have seen a small number of patients over the past 2 years that have had the minimally invasive procedure. Overall they have progressed much faster than the traditional TKA. The pain level is significantly lower, the reliance upon assistive devices also is much less, and the return of ROM has been quicker and easier. Some of the patients even progressed so well that they did just as well as some of my patients that had a standard arthroscopy. The words amazing, and unbelievable come to mind. However, these results come with a caveat. As mentioned in another response, the surgery is best performed by an ortho. surgeon that specializes in this procedure. I have had a few patients that have undergone the procedure with poor results. These have all had a surgeon that was inexperienced with the minimally invasive method. I believe that the results are very surgeon specific. I don't think this point can be overemphasized. Another source of information is the company that manufactures the prosthesis. You might check the company called Biomet. They have specific patient education information on this procedure, for both the hip and knee. J. Pierce PT Mainstream Physical Therapy Ft.
