Keep going. If you are following the diet, you will lose weight.

How much do you have to lose? You may not be losing because you are not eating enough. Would you care to post a daily menu for us so maybe we can give you some suggestions?

not losing

When I first began my diet a few weeks ago, I found this support digest to be very encouraging and it gave me the motivation that I needed to keep going. Now, I'm thoroughly discouraged. I can't continue on Phase One much longer because I don't think that leaving grains and fruit entirely out of my diet is healthy but yet I have gained weight on this diet instead of losing so much as a fraction of a pound. I don't eat large portions, I don't cheat, I try to make myself eat all the required meals and snacks even though I'm usually not hungry, I work out in a fitness program 4 days a week and walk a couple of miles several days a week and drink plenty of water. I don't know what else to do. Are there any ladies that are peri-menapausal that are doing this diet and having success? I'm thinking perhaps it is a hormonal hindrance. I'm on medication for thyroid and have that under control so that isn't my problem. I can't give up because I know the weight will continue to add on but get so tired of trying with such discouragement. I need to hear from others my age (52) and know if they are having difficulty also or if I'm an isolated case. Reminder: The South Beach Diet is not low-carb. Nor is it low-fat. The South Beach Diet teaches you to rely on the right carbs and the right fats-the good ones-and enables you to live quite happily without the bad carbs and bad fats. I am 60 years old and have many internal medical problems from an automobile accident 5 years ago. I also cannot exercise much, but I am losing weight. Not fast, but it is coming off quite well. Due to IBS-D, I could not go on a full phase 1. I have to have bread to keep the diarrhea under control. I use my steamer and fill it with fresh vegetables and usually put a boneless, skinless chicken breast in it. This is delicious in my opinion. I can walk between 4 and 5 miles per day on a metal hip and femur, but I cannot do it rapidly. I am not craving carbs or sugars, and I think that is the important thing. I have also come down two clothing sizes which tickles me to death. I know I am eating healthy foods and that is good.

I hear the discouragement in your letter and I feel so bad for you. I'm

very glad you wrote in to the group so we can offer you suggestions to try.

The exercise you're doing is wonderful!! Do you think you're building

muscle (which is denser and heavier than fat)? Have you measured yourself?

The tape measure tells us what's going on inside.

Leaving fruit and grains out of your diet for 2 weeks is perfectly ok. Dr.

A. found that these can be 'trigger foods' that MAY cause people to over

eat. If fruits and grains are added slowly to our meal plan, AFTER we've

gone through P1 (to rid of the cravings), we can better handle those foods

and avoid future cravings.

How long have you been on phase 1? Dr. A. recommends 2 weeks. Most of the

folks I know have found they don't loose as much after 2 weeks on P1 as they

did earlier. That's my case too.

How was your diet before SBD? If you were eating pretty healthy to begin

with, or ate low carb, you'll find that you don't lose as quickly. But,

that's ok, because you're now eating a healthy meal plan that is all-around

nutritious.

Beth offered good advice about posting your meal plan for a day. I'm

thinking the same thing she is, that you're not eating enough food. Do you

know that if you don't eat enough, your body shuts down and goes into the

'starvation mode' and you begin to lose muscle and not fat?

Please let us help you!

Well hon,

I am not as mature as you are but I would like to offer up what

excuses (*s*) I can for the lack of weight loss. I feel so badly

for you cause it doesn't feel good to expend all that energy and

have no return.

My first thot was; is she having proper bowel movements? Because I

am personally following a chipper shredder around but if I don't

take my prune juice I won't achieve " a comfortable state. " I can

take colace and laxatives but nothing works like good old prune

juice and if stuff is not moving thru the digestive track like it

should your body will suck every calorie (good/bad) out of it,

before it moves it along. (I know your not spose to have juice in

Phase 1, but there are fates worse than prune juice....lol.)

My second thot was; lets get a little diruetic going to kick start

things a bit. How about some iced tea or green tea? Maybe lil diet

pepsi or something w/ a lil caffiene?

My third thot was; Are you eating first thing in the a.m.? Cause I

couldn't bring myself to eat first thing in the morn till Carol said

I had too, so I did, and weight started coming off - I think maybe

you might have to " trick " your metabolism a lil bit.

On the thot of " tricking " your metabolism - I would continue along

that thot by changing up my exercise routine to different days and

maybe eating at slightly different times. My girlfriend

inadvertently fasted for one day and that was all it took to kick

start her - altho I am in no way advising that - just mentioning

it. She spent the day in the day in the ER with her daughter.

My final thot is salt. Are you consuming a whoop of salt? I

suggest changing to Celtic Sea Salt with your own grinder. It has

natural sea salts and magnisium and potassium in it. It is not

plain NA and is much better for you.

After all this, I would hope that there is one thing that might work

for you - if not, it just about has to be the thyroid doesn't it?

Good Luck to you,

Anita

Thanks to all those that were so supportive on my frustrated venting on not losing any weight. I've been on phase one for almost 3 weeks, cheating only for a drink on my birthday and oatmeal one morning. In response to some of the questions, I have no problems with daily stools....those are quite regular. I am not noticing any difference in my clothes fitting any looser and in fact, some are actually feeling tight again. I joined Curves 2 weeks ago and my official measurement is another month away. Perhaps it is muscle building that is weighing me down but I doubt I'd have built that much muscle in 2 weeks. I've always been on a diet similar to SB since being dianosed with hyperthyroidism about 10 years ago. Back then the rage was SugarBusters and I stuck pretty much to it. I don't even know how it differs from SB except for the refining of the good fats and good carbs. I can't eat anything for at least an hour after taking my medication so breakfast is usually mid morning for me and then followed up with my exercise so as to get my metabolism going early in the day. A couple of responses were from those of my age category and it is especially encouraging to know that it CAN be done. Marilyn, how long did it take you to come down two dress sizes? I don't care what I weigh but would like to fit into my clothes again and look nice in them. I would like to lose 35 pounds long term goal but right now I'd be excited with just ONE POUND LOSS!

I second that Amen! I'm 63 and in menopause. I'm hardly losing at

all. However, I feel great so I won't give up.

Hang in there......I am also perimenopausal and on thyroid meds......55 years old.....and I didn't think I was making any progress in Phase I either.....but things started moving in Phase 2 for whatever reason. I also had severe cravings the entire time I was in Phase I despite the fact that they said the cravings would stop around day 4. Once I started Phase II and could add some bread back in, the cravings for SUGAR stopped. So we are all different, but SOME of us are alike!

How long have you been on Phase I????????
