Hi ....I also live in VA. I had my surgery at UVA, where will yours be? I

weighed exactly the same as you b4 my surgery, 252 but I am only 5'2. I had my

surgery on Feb. 4th and I now weigh 175. My goal was 150 and I am only 25 lbs

away from that at just a lil over 5 months. Just think you will be saying the

same thing in the near future. I wish you well on your journey and hope to hear

from you soon. I used to live in Richmond but now i'm in the Sheandoah

Valley.....Annee

Did you get to read the book? It will help you with knowing why it works, and how to make it work better.

Yes, I am unhealthy but my cholesterol isn't as bad. It was over 200 and is a little under now. My blood pressure was high and now it is normal and low. I weighed 305 when I started in Oct 03 and am now 247. :) Long way to go but I will get there. I can't even imagine going back to the way I used to eat.

You can have the dressing you said has to go as long as it has 3 grams of sugar in it or under. Any dressing is fine as long as you watch the sugar.

It doesn't matter what times you eat but you have to eat 3 meals and 3 snacks evenly spaced out. Yes, it is important, even if you are not hungry. One reason is because your body is going to go into starvation mode thinking you are not feeding it enough, and you are not. It will hold onto every fat cell and won't let it go and you will stall eventually or even gain. The other reason is that this diet has you keeping your blood sugar level all day long, that is the reason you need to eat every few hours. You are trying to reset your blood chemistry to work more efficiently which is going to give you the healthy results. How you are eating is not healthy for your body. You are not only looking for weightloss, you are looking for good health or you won't be around to get that degree. Your brain also needs that nutrition to function normally. Your body is like a machine and if you don't give it the right nutrition, it dies. Keeping your blood sugar level throughout the day also helps keeps cravings away and any eventual binging. You will not get the healthy results you want if you don't treat your body right. It's okay to start out with the snack and then have the meal at noon, then another snack 3 hours later, lunch (even if it's not at what normal people would call a lunch hour), 3 hours later a snack, and then dinner. If you eat something a little while before you go to sleep, you will keep your blood sugar level throughout the night until you eat again in the morning. It really is important even if you aren't hungry. Your body will get used to it and needs it. Good luck, Carol

Hi, My name is Anita and I come from Cheyenne, WY. I weigh 230 lbs and am 5'6" and a size 20 and am 37 yr old. My blood pressure started going up after my last child 2 years ago and when it finally reached 160/110 they put me on meds and now it is controlled. I had my lipid panel checked about 6 months ago (uggh) and my total cholesteral (sp?) was 1400. I take 2 different medications to control my cholesteral. (But it is still a bit high) However my dad is in pretty good shape and his cholesteral is always high too, so there is probably a little genetics going on there as well. Anyways, I started the SB diet 3 days ago after I sent the stepkids back after summer visitation. (I thot that would be a good time to start.) So far so good. There is a couple of questions that I have tho. First off, as you can see by the time of this post, I burn a lot of midnite oil - as I am getting my bachelor's degree currently and like to work after everyone has gone to bed. So I do not get up at the crack o dawn for breakfast. After getting the kids up and around, I am not ready to eat anything till about noon. So I eat at noon, I don't snack, and I have dinner. Tonite I had one chicken breast and a salad and a diet yogurt bar for dessert. I drink iced tea all day long. I don't require any more food than that. So my question is must I eat more than that? I am not hungry in between meals. At noon I had a small portion of cottage cheese and a few shavings of turkey breast. I used to exercise everyday but I got pneumonia this summer and haven't quite gotten over it so I have not walked my 1.3 miles a nite like I normally do. So since I spend a whoop of time on my butt in front of this computer - is that enuf to eat?Secondly - that balsamic vinegar dressing has got to go - are those Kraft Carb Well dressings with O carbs (uses Splenda for a sweetner) ok to use instead?Anybody as fat and unhealthy as I am? :)Thank you in advance for you responses, AnitaPS: OH, I noticed a bunch of posts wondering if this was a good diet and I just wanted to say that my doctor told me to go on this diet. Reminder: The South Beach Diet is not low-carb. Nor is it low-fat. The South Beach Diet teaches you to rely on the right carbs and the right fats-the good ones-and enables you to live quite happily without the bad carbs and bad fats. Yes...you must eat more than that. You must feed your body what it needs to

stay healthy. There are plenty of very busy people in this group that are

more than willing to share some tips about how to be prepared for this way

of eating. Water is also very important and so is exercise if you can get

it in. If you can get your hands on the book read it and it will explain in

more about your blood sugar and the GI of foods. You can do this and get

yourself of all the meds too.

Hi! My name is Colleen Vanderbilt. I live in Flower Mound, TX (suburb

in the DFW metroplex). I'm 5'6 " tall, 35 years old, and depending on

the doctor's scale I weigh 155-165. My blood pressure is good. I

always joke about that being the only thing that still works (I have

Crohn's, acid refulx, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, a thyroid

problem, chemical depression, and anxiety). However, my doctors have

fussed at me for years about my cholesterol being to high along with

my tricglycerides. This year my endochronologist said the words " lose

weight " so I don't have to go on any more medication. (I take a lot

for all the above mentioned and adding one always throws things out of

whack for awhile.) My PA suggested the South Beach Diet (she

disapproves of Atkins) and said it should also help lower my blood

sugar which should get rid of my recurrent yeast infections. As for

losing weight, I'll be happy if I go from my size 14 jeans back to my

size 12's. We'll see what my endo says when I go back in a couple of

months.

I'm in Phase 1. My mother and I started it the same day and exchange

ideas and encouragement via e-mail (she's in KS). I'm doing ok on the

diet (I can tell I've lost some. I don't have a scale.) but I'm having

to learn how to cook. I know it sounds crazy but neither me or my

husband cook. We live off of sandwiches, microwaveable meals, or " get

the water boiling and dump it in " meals. My mom said I'm the pickiest

eater she knows (she loves everything)especially where vegetables are

concerned. The combination has made this hard for me to do.

I picked up a produce book that says what to look for and how to

prepare and cook it as well as storage. I need one for meat. Yes, I'm

clueless.

I've been using the Egg Beaters Garden Vegetable + Smart Balance

" cheese " for omelets most every morning. I don't think I can get

myself to eat another salad. I'm tireder than I was before I went on

the diet but not horribly so.

I am proud of one thing. We get together with friends once a month to

play games which is a snackfest with pizza for dinner. I planned ahead

and brought lots of cucumber slices, some part-skim mozeralla sticks,

and some celery stuffed with laughing cow light garlic & herb cheese.

I had a sandwich between lettuce leaves for dinner. I actually did

better than I thought. I needed a support hug from my husband when the

pizza arrived. I did get cranky towards the end (we were there for 6

hours) and insisted they move the clear glass jar of M & Ms to the other

side of the table. But I did it without caving in!

Well, this is probably way too long for an intro post. I'm sorry about

that. I usually lurk and just pop up occasionally.

Thanks for listening.

:-)

Colleen
