Belated Introduction

I'm 48, female, and live on the Central Florida east coast. I have never had to face the brave challenge that many of you are going through with very large weight losses, but I have fought a "yo-yo" pattern that seems to return every decade. I keep weight off for long periods, but quickly put it back on in a very short time.

I'm 5 ft 8 in. At 23 (143 lbs), I joined WW and lost 18 pounds and kept it off for 9 years. At 35 (158 lbs), I rejoined WW, lost 22 lbs, and kept it off for 7 years.

The loss maintenance periods have shortened since then. At 44 (165 lbs), I quickly lost 20 lbs on WW, but only kept it off for a couple years. Earlier this summer, I returned to WW (at 168 lbs), but after three weeks of following the program to the T, I did not lose or gain one ounce.

I know for sure that all my gains and losses have been a result of either a slowed or restarted metabolism, but WW obviously is not "re-kicking" it for me like it did when I was younger.

I'm interested in the SBD WOL for several reasons, but primarily because, for the first time in my life, I have been diagnosed with high-blood pressure and high cholestrol. BP was 110/70 at a routine doc visit in June (now semi-controlled with entry level meds), bad cholestrol at 170 (forgot to get the GOOD cholestrol reading but doc said it was excellent). Doc said he wouldn't be concerned if it wasn't for my BP. Told me to get on Lipidor, but I've resisted.

I became interested in the SBD because Dr. Agaston developed it for his heart patients, but I can't seem to find any confirmation of cholestrol/BP reductions unless the patient was very overweight and the improvement would have likely happened with a weight loss and healthy change of diet of any kind.

Does anyone in the group have a diet bio similar to mine? I know I'm overweight, but not severely obese (at this point), but I'm a little hesitant about jumping into this non-lowfat diet that is so opposite of what I'm used to. I'd love to hear some confirmation from others that lost 30 lbs or less and also brought their BP and cholestrol levels to normal on the SBD.

Sorry for the long drawn out intro, and I very much appreciate all responses.

Best regards,

Jody

I relate to the yo-yo pattern! But if you have been doing WW, you are

going to do FABULOUS on SB. Why? If you have never restricted carbs

before, you are going to see an INCREDIBLE drop in weight during

Phase 1.

I lost 10 pounds (started at 154) the first two weeks!

I had my cholesterol checked in November - 262! It hasn't been below

200 since I can remember. After starting the SB WOL in June, after 5

weeks, my cholesterol is now 170!!! I am ECSTATIC!

JUST DO IT! Get your food TODAY! This is for your HEALTH and when you

lose the weight, that's just the topping!

The first week you will feel icky, headach-y, but that is just your

body going through sugar and carb withdrawals. The second week the

cravings will be GONE and you will feel MAHVALOUS! Also, remember

IT'S ONLY 14 DAYS!!! We can do ANYTHING for only 14 days, right?

Hi, Robyn --

Thanks much for your reply. I soooo very much didn't want to alienate those with a lot to lose (like I always seemed to do in my WW meetings). I know it must be very aggravating to some that I'm asking for help at 5'8" at 168 lbs, but I'M STRESSED TOO because I've increased TWO clothes sizes in only 6 months! All of a sudden, in the past year, the weight is packing on at 2-3 lbs a month and I've not changed my eating habits!

As I see it, I can continue to allow myself to balloon or stop it now. I've many friends and relatives that continue to battle 100+ overweight problems, and it scares me to death because I think I'd just throw the towel in.

I don't want to discourage anyone, because many that I know have overcome that (including the friend that recommended SBD and lost 82 lbs), but it was a long, hard struggle. I'm not sure that I'm up to that, so therefore I am a "chicken" that wants to take care of it NOW.

Thanks again for your understanding and support and all the best to your continued goals!

Jody

Re: Belated Introduction

Jody,I mirror your numbers except for the fact that I hit more than 250.Until about 28 my high number was 140. If I inched towards it I knew I had to cut back because I did not want to pass that number.Seems like twenty pounds at a time it crept up. Iknow you might not understand how more than a hundred pounds creeps up but it does. From that time until now I have been a constant dieter only to regain and upgain(is that a new word?) to my weight now.Hyposthyroidism, yep. PCOS, yep.But every pound I own, I did it.Friends of mine who are having trouble with gaining twenty or so pounds I try to pursuade to get a handle on it before it happens to them. This has been the simplest plan, and man, I have screwed up royally. I rebound easier to get back on track here.I hope you all the luck in your endeavor. From what I've read your BP should go down. Thanks for sharing.RobynReminder: The South Beach Diet is not low-carb. Nor is it low-fat. The South Beach Diet teaches you to rely on the right carbs and the right fats-the good ones-and enables you to live quite happily without the bad carbs and bad fats. You are doing a wise thing, to try to get you weight under control before it

controls you. The good thing about the South Beach is that it is a way of

eating for the rest of your life. It isn't hard and it's delicious.

You spend your life fighting dirt, and when you die they bury you in it.
