You are a grad of Tufts... why wouldn't they follow suit with one of the most recognizable grads? Are there other Medical Schools giving out advice as well?

Look, this is not just me saying this. On AtkinsFacts.org I also

include the full text position statements by the following authorities:

American Cancer Society

American Dietetic Association

American Heart Association

American Institute for Cancer Research

American Kidney Fund

American Medical Association

Center for Science in the Public Interest

Cleveland Clinic

Cornell University ative Extension

Fredrick J. Stare, Ph.D. (founder of Harvard's nutrition department)

L Blackburn, M.D., Ph.D. (current Chair of Harvard's nutrition

department)

s Hopkins School of Medicine

Mayo Clinic

Northwestern University School of Medicine

The Medical Letter

Tufts University School of Nutrition

UC Berkeley School of Public Health

United States Department of Agriculture

Do you really think the AMA is a " kook " ?

Instead of name calling, maybe we could instead have a dialogue?

I am all for hearing why this may not be a healthy plan, but most of

the website and what you are saying is about Atkins. I have read up

a good deal about Atkins before I tried SBD and they are differnt. I

would not do the Atkins diet because I wanted to lose my weight in a

healthier way. Tell us why SBD is bad for me and I am more than

willing to listen.

But in looking at your site, all of those institutions are talking

about ATKINS, not South Beach. There is only one mention of the SBD,

and only Tufts is referenced. Did I miss where they were talking

about SB?

Atkins is NOT South Beach.

This is the ONLY diet that has ever worked for me, and though I am not

a nutritionist, it seems pretty well-balanced to me.

Exactly. I don’t care about the

inconsistencies in the book. They

are minor and, IMO, explained. Tell

me why eating like this for the rest of my life is bad for me. Show me how the levels of saturated fats

are bad for me. Or how I am missing

out on nutrients. Really, all I’ve

done is add a *ton* of fresh

vegetables to my diet, substituting lean beef for the fatty beef I was eating,

eating more fish, than I was before.

What am I eliminating from my diet that I

ought to be eating?

And what am I eating that I ought not be

eating? I am not and never will be

a vegetarian so I’m totally uninterested in hearing about how I ought to

be one. So, as an omnivore, how is

SB hurting me?

Am I reading the web site correctly? The American Dietetic Association

information is from *1975*??? South Beach

wasn’t even around then.

I’m looking around at the web site

from the American Dietetic Association and so far I can’t find *anything* that specifically references South Beach…

*nothing* *nothing* *nothing*. Even the ‘top’ result

returned after searching for ‘south beach’ doesn’t even have ‘south

beach’ on the page! Remember

that, outside of the first 2 weeks, South

Beach is *not* low carb. Plenty of Atkins-bashing but South Beach

is not Atkins. I had whole wheat

wraps at lunch, whole wheat pizza crust at dinner, and later (for desert) I’ll

have fruit (and low-fat ricotta).

Not low carb but all allowable according to South Beach

guidelines.

Tell us why SBD is bad

for me and I am more than

willing to listen.

Sheri.

Dr. Greger, when you create a site called " SouthBeachFacts.org " and

base all your research on South Beach, THEN, and only THEN will we

have anything to discuss! Your research is all Atkins based. The 2

diets are NOT THE SAME!!!

And if you read my reply - my physician agrees with you about Atkins.

He said the diet would kill me. So, if Atkins and SBD are " so alike "

then why would my doctor give me a death sentence?

I assure you, Dr. " Vegan " - my lifestyle before SBD was a lot more

harmful to my health than this plan will ever be.

And I agree - a VEGAN ACTIVIST attempting to dismantle an omnivor

diet holds about as much water as a sieve. You have no ground to

stand on when you oppose a meat eating diet of ANY KIND (Atkins, SBD,

or even Weight Watchers for that matter!) simply because of your

beliefs.

And, I also agree you are a KOOOOOOOK.

PS: I noticed you left various Diabetes organizations off your " list "

of anti-SBD. How come? (Because they think you are a nut nut, too?)

May I ask why you are on this list? We are here because we are adults making

choices for ourselves, often with the blessings of our doctors. You have no

way of knowing our individual reasons for being here, and you are

undermining our efforts at improving our health. If you don't agree with the

diet, that is your perogative, but trying to convince us here is very rude.

Please leave and leave us alone.

Hum.

Well, I was raised a vegetarian. Until I was 13, I didn't eat meat at

all. But then I got sick and it was one of the few things I could

keep down. So I've been on both sides. My entire family eats

meat now, mostly because I'm the one that cooks here.

My Father, who has had a heart attack and several different heart

surgeries was recommended to go onto this diet by his very

respected cardiologist. Since then, he has reduced his chances

of getting another heart attack by about half, along with lowering

his blood sugar and cholesterol. Because of this diet, it is

unlikely he'll have another heart attack and he'll live much longer.

I would hardly dislike a diet that has pretty much saved my

father's life and kept him with me, would I? I have seen that it

works, and is beneficial to one's health.

I had always been a little bit under my normal weight until I got

sick. The different medications and such made me gain weight

and as I was so sick, I was unable to do my daily 250 laps

swimming. That's why I turned to this diet.

Not only do I eat better than I used to (I eat more veggies and

fruits and I'm constantly trying new healthy things) but the gloom

and fatigue that is associated with my illness has lifted

considerably. I have much more energy (which is good, I am in

college after all) and I feel fantastic. I'm much more active, I

started swimming again and surfing.

So, my dear doctor, don't (or maybe do) take offense when I say:

Stuff it.

And I agree with another member of this board, you ARE a kook.

A kook who wants attention and doesn't especially know what

he's talking about, since a majority of his research is on Atkins.

I never said they were. But there is a section on South Beach which I

thought people would be interested, and the Tufts article on South

Beach posted for the first time online. I thought people would be

interested in what the nutrition world was saying about the diet they

advocate.

I have never seen any position statements from Diabetes organizations.

If you see any, pro or con, please let me know. All I could find was

the s Hopkins Diabetes White Paper which came out strongly against

low carb diets. See for yourself at:

---Dr Mike(if I may presume to call you that) I am a diabetic(type

2) and until I started the SB plan, my sugars were just out of

whack! I was having alot of trouble keeping my blood sugar levels

low. Since starting the plan in May I now take half the diabetes meds

(metformin/glyburide)I used to and my sugar are always in control

now. I feel great and the sugar cravings are gone and I look forward

to the day when I can say I have lost all the weight I want to lose

and maybe even go off my diabetes meds forever!!My doctor is majorly

impressed and next week I will check in at the Diabetes Education

Centre and I am sure they will be overjoyed at my success thus far

Too!! In my opinion, we are eating healthy when our diets consist

mainly of protein, veggies, fruits ,and whole grains & the good

fats!! We are not starving and we are not overeating on the SB plan

so how can this be wrong??

Just want to jump in and say that I see no call for rudeness toward Dr. Greger or anyone else here. He is simply offering us information that he thought might be of interest. That's it...

Dr. Greger, I thank you for helping us to gain a perspective from other angles regarding this way of eating. Fortunately, the SBD is very, very different from Atkins in all the ways the article is critical of the diet. We are expected to eat all the good things out there but basically cut out the very processed 'junk' that the commercial food industry has tried to lure us with in order to make big bucks (and big waistlines, hips and thighs on the consumer *G*).

Regardless of any of that, I, for one, am always interested in hearing other's contributions to topics and believe Dr. Greger was only trying to be a friend. For that I am grateful.. ;-)

Sincerely,

Alice (Rockville, Md.)

My doctor recommended the SBD to me, especially

looking over the family history.

Can you post the links to your SBD information as what

you have on Atkins is mentioned in the SBD book.

What's the matter Mike, Atkins losing too many people to a better,

safer and more sensible diet? Do you actually have to go trolling

on the competitions group site to work your scare tactics in the

hopes that you can get a few more Atkins followers?

I've only ever heard of the dangers of Atkins, not the South Beach.

Why don't you just have a big slab of bacon, chill out and go back

to your own dwindling group!

I must apologize to both the group and Dr Mike. When I insert my

foot in my mouth, I do it well.

Not following the whole thread on this and seeing the Atkins Diet

ads so many times on our group, and then seeing the link to the

Atkins diet at the end of Dr Mike's message, I made the leap that

he was an Atkins person making trouble on this list.

I'm guilty and embarrassed that I jumped to such conclusions.

It's not smart to try and think half way through the night!

Best,

Keeney

PS: I sent a message earlier that didn't post for some reason.

Hey guys,

I am surprised this thread hasn't been dropped a long time ago. All I can

say is this... there are TONS of doctors in this world and not all of them

either have an interest in or continue their education in ALL 'doctor

matters' (I should know, I am married to a doctor) and sometimes even when

they do extend their interests to let's say nutrition... they might still

have a different perspective or a skewed view of things based on some 'ol

prof they had back in the day- hey, look at the knothole Dr. Atkins got drug

through himself! lol

Let's drop the thread everyone- too many quality messgaes to contend with

beating this one to death - keep doin' your thing guys - we'll all haul a

much lighter ass to the scales next week for doing so!

Have a great week-end everyone,

Cheryl
